Let's hope he doesn't turn a profit....that would make 95% of the board wrong.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

For some reason I woke up early today (5:45) and was reading the previous Strasburg post and saw where Jeff had listed this back up for auction. Whats insane is that when I checked out the auction, the card was at $13,100 and now 4 hours later the card is up to $15,500. Good Publicity for the hobby.

i believe the Carpenters said it best.......

We've only just begun to live,
    White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way.
    And yes, We've just begun.

Before the rising sun we fly,
    So many roads to choose
We start our walking and learn to run.
    And yes, We've just begun.

Sharing horizons that are new to us,
Watching the signs along the way,
Talking it over just the two of us,
    Working together day to day
    Together.

And when the evening comes we smile,
    So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow,
    And yes, We've just begun.

his Ebay ID is just as douchey as that photo of him holding the card.
  • nam812nam812 Posts: 10,601 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just read through the whole auction and saw where he sent it to BGS. Why on earth would he send it to be graded? That will add nothing to the value especially with that unfortunate centering.

  • I was one of the few who said good for him for buying it.

And now I say good for him for trying to make a profit. Nothing wrong with taking profits.

I don't like this auction at all. Too much hype surround the card=too much chance for shill bidding. IF it sells, I don't know if the price will be legit.

I am happy to be wrong. At this point this is an investment card and not a collectible card to me. I am a conservative investor and it has worked fine for me so far. Are there days I wish I would make a really risky investment? Sure, when those risks go up. However, I for one would not sleep well with an expensive baseball card in my safe, knowing that one or two bad pitching performances could shrink the value very quickly. Good for him if he makes a profit.
  • I bet BGS gives it at least a 9.5 just because of the publicity they will get off of this card, even though the centering is probably around an 8.5

This is getting waaaayyyyyy out of hand. The bid is up to $36,000 on the red Strasburg auto?????????? Come on people. He could blow his arm tomorrow and be done.

That's what I would have done. No sense in having a number grade put on a 1/1.

I think these prices are great for the hobby.

In his answered questions he says that the card has been graded a 9.5image

<< <i>I just received an email from Beckett - the card has been graded at 9.5 - which I am very happy about, since BGS has a strong reputation of being a strict grading service (as they should be). They will he shipping the card back to me tomorrow, and I will have it Thursday. Yes, I will update the auction. Thanks. Rob >>

    Yes, very strict indeed.

....and the winning bidder will hold it for 2 days and put it back on Ebay......this reminds me of a glorified pyramid scheme.....I would not want to be the last person holding this card (especially for that kind of coin).....

Two have tried $16,000...reserve not met.

    Can I get a 20? 20? 20? 20?. We got 16 over here, can I get a 20?

I'm guessing that Beckett grading it=Beckett hyping the auction a bit more which is a valid reason to grade it.
  • nam812nam812 Posts: 10,601 ✭✭✭✭✭
That card being graded a BGS 9.5 with that centering is a big old steaming crock of image
  • These big pocket guys are very good for the hobby. I have been the benefactor of some of these deep pocket guys,
as have some others here. Don't scream at the hands that can feed you. I think his reserve is probably 20k if he
really doesn't want to sell it, and just see how high it could go. If he wants to make a quick buck, then I'm guessing
    his reserve is 18.5k.

I'm gonna win that card and then get Strasburg to sign it and put it back on ebay.
  • digicatdigicat Posts: 8,551 ✭✭
Centering is slightly better than 60/40, so my guess is that it got a 9.0 on the centering, and a 9.5 or 10 on the other subgrades, which will always get a 9.5.

If Beckett gave a 9.5 or a 10 on centering, then they're totally out of it.

If that card did in fact grade 9.5 by Beckett, Beckett loses a LOT of credibility IMO. Although, I never liked Beckett and their grading anyway.

With that kind of scratch you could definitely buy your way into the Mantle club.
  • I wonder what his reserve is at? He paid 16k for the card and it's currently at $16,600. I would hope for his sake that he lifts the reserve soon. Can you imagin if the reserve wasn't met and THEN Strasburg suffered an injury? DOH! It would be a better idea to get rid of the card while the demand is hot.

I loved that line too. It made me laugh out loud actually. But in a way I understand what he's trying to say. He bought the card on the "hype" only. Now, since the hype has been justified over a 3 game stretch, he wants to cash in. Too funny. Perhaps the card will be reauctioned once a month and will rise and fall based on the year-to-date Win-Loss record. Card market meets Wall Street. This reminds me of the Edward Jones commercial where the guy buys the artwork, then as soon as the auction ends he says "I'd like to sell it now."

I won't be at all surprised to see this card get a 9.5 for centering.
Not because I think the card deserves it, but rather that I don't recall the last time I saw a modern card come out of Beckett without a 9.5 for centering.
And like others have said, in my opinion, Beckett wanted their name all over this card.

Nothing wrong with riding the coat tails of the better Red autographed card thats almost $40K now with 6 days left.

Actually the seller of this card timed his to end within 90 minutes of the better Red card. Good for him. I think it will go for 2/3rds of what the red one goes for.

But they both may be plagued by zero feedback clowns at the end.

Im sure its not the last time both of these cards sell this year.

Beckett putting that card in a BGS 9.5 is akin to . . . Well, it's akin to . . . Wow! There's no rhyme or reason for that card to be in a BGS 9.5. Beckett certainly has loosened their standards in the name of free publicity. What limited respect I had for them has now vanished!!!

Sounds plausible to me. I figured it would get a 9 on centering and a 9.5 or higher on everything else.

The centering is NOT worse than 60/40, btw.
