ADDED PHOTO'S To grade or not to grade (Franklin and Washington)

Hello,

I had a 1959 mint set that started to open due to age and quickly put the coins in protective cases. I was able to look at the coins more in depth and both the franklin half and washington quarter appear to be deep mirror prooflike (based on they have the same appeal as several previous graded coins i have purchased).

I wanted to know if I should possibly send the two in for grades to see if they will be worth the grading cost or if these date type coins are a dime a dozen. sorry dont have a camera avail right now.

    Deep mirror is only one aspect. Some other aspects include how clean are the mirrors... e.g. hairlines etc., is there any cameo contrast, are there any wangdoodles on the coin etc. etc.

    Was this a mint set or proof set? Just asking because you first stated it was a mint set and there are a few known proof-like 1959 Franklins.

    If it's a proof set the Franklins would be worth grading if they're cam or dcam, they bring nice premiums.

    im sorry it was a mint set with the cheap plastic. the mirror on the franklin is fairly clear i can see my face and glasses but not as nice as the pr 69 deep cameo i compaired it to.

    If the coins truly have mirror-like surfaces, you probably either have a proof set or a mint set whose coins have been polished. Images should be helpful, however.

    If the Franklin half and the Washington quarter are Proof coins with cameo devices, the cameo must be on both sides. If the cameo is only on one side, chances are the coins are not worth the grading fee and postage. If they are cameo coins on both sides, they must also be free of any major hairlines or deep toning spots to be worth grading.

    I know that these standards sound high, but that's why cameo Proof coins are expensive. Run of the mill Proof coins are common relative to demand and don't command very high prices.

    THe coins were part of a mint set. They were sealed when i received them several years ago however the plastic has came apart on the quarter, half, and mint mark piece. I dont beleive anyone polished them as the set was sealed when i received it. is it normal for mint sets to have a nice cameo appearance?

    The coins came in the same type of pic sinin posted in this forum earlier. im sorry for any miscomunication, but i am learning about the difference between proofs/mint sets.

    Here are the franklin photos. the quarter ones came out bad, but both coins look the same as of condition and mirror like image. in the last picture i put my finger above the coin and you can see the reflection.

    Those are proof coins, so what you have is/was a proof set.
