Looking at some 1973-D rolls and found this.

It's not much but I think it's neat.

is part of the S from one coin retained in the die and on a later coin,
falls out and then becomes a strikethrough?

Die letter gets filled with junk, which eventually falls out onto a planchet, as it is being struck. The junk which is shaped like the letter causes an incuse letter to be struck on the coin.
