It certainly will make cross-overs more interesting. It will also create another tier of pricing.

And the beat goes on.... wonder what the next 'grade enhancement' will be - and who will introduce it. Should run a pool on this one. Cheers, RickO

Quick, run out and buy all the 'choice for the grade' coins in older NGC holders.

CAC should change it's stickers to green and gold plus's and green and gold stars - kinda like what I got on my homework in first grade!

I think the next thing should be four stars in outline with them colored in depending on how many stars your coin got for the grade.

Just focus on buying coins that are gold for the grade.
  • Eye appeal is subjective so thats meaningless and they cant grade coins consistently in the current grades they alreay have so they are adding more grades? Huh?

<< <i>Eye appeal is subjective so thats meaningless and they cant grade coins consistently in the current grades they alreay have so they are adding more grades? Huh? >>

Do you feel differently about PCGS using the "+" designation?
  • At least PCGS includes the secure plus program which does have value.

<< <i>At least PCGS includes the secure plus program which does have value. >>

But that has nothing to do with your comment "and they cant grade coins consistently in the current grades they alreay have so they are adding more grades? Huh?". So, I will ask again, do you feel differently about PCGS using the "+" designation?
  • Well PCGS I do feel is more consistent than NGC. And since the plus service is quite costly it should only be used for expensive coins with large price spreads between grades so it does have merit. I cant figure out however how someone could get a plus on say a late date lincoln with only 5 or 10 bucks between grades though. Who would submit that coin?

I bet someone does a +/+ so both obverse and reverse are eligible for pluses........... I want my cut when it happensimage

They listen to customers? There is no extra fee?

    PCGS better be worried.

It is my understanding that PCGS and NGC worked together coming up with the Plus Grading. NGC waited for the unveiling to discuss the concept with their dealer network and collector members.

Of course it's free, how else could they bombard the market with their product? Brace yourselves people for tons of MS66+ and MS67+'s! Here they come! They know there's a window of opportunity for this stuff, why not financially gain from it before everyone catches on and the hype dies out. They know that they can't compete with PCGS's $65 tier.
I'll even bet that their plus will be bigger than PCGS's plus. image

Ah, leo, at least YOU have been nothing but consistent with your posts and tone..... image

For me, the NGC+ is fine...if I agree with the coin and grade, I have no problems. For PCGS, I also have no problems. If their cost difference is to make up for all the coins that use the service getting scanned and databased, then that is a cost. They have to recoup their costs somehow. I don't believe NGC does the same type of scanning, right? So they have no additional cost there. Nor did they spend money and resources investigating this....their program is just a program change. There should NOT be any additional fees (and there aren't).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Plus is the new "solid for grade." Eventually, a plus-plus (++) will be needed.

I am waiting for 3-D slabs (you need special glasses to view the coins) and the scratch n' sniff option.

I haven;t read their press release yet

will they have plus and keeps stars?

what was their stars anyway, exceptional eye appeal?

so now top for grade and exceptional eye appeal, thats what I want - but not willing to stretch too much for them

It's a good marketing ploy for NGC. They had to do something. And it is easy. No extra work or cost. Of course it does nothing to thwart coin doctors or combat grade-flation.

I'm curious to see if NGC is as tight with pluses as PCGS. I think they have to be for the program to be meaningful.

Interesting that NGC will plus MS60 & 61.

Will there come a time when PCGS offers plus grading without the overhead of laser scanning and the database? I.e., just like NGC...no extra cost, no extra services or protection, available for most every grading service? Or is the next step likely to be scanning and plusing for more grading tiers at higher cost?

at least this gives the forum something to talk about.. i suppose.

i get the feeling that these are the types of actions that result in unintended
    consequences for all.

  • keojkeoj Posts: 1,000 ✭✭✭
Unintended consequences is right on target.....the more that folks try to delineate grades......stars, pluses, etc. on what is clearly and fundamentally an opinion to begin with, the more that I think simpler is better.

Yes this is the bottem line.

submitted to NGC under applicable grading tiers including Economy, Early Bird, Gold Rush, Specialty Gold, Express and WalkThrough tiers are automatically examined for during grading, and there is no additional fee or special service request.
