grade the raw Walker (a modest eBay score) (grade results)

I was trolling for an upgrade for the VF25-ish 1935-S in my album and got this for $8.76 on eBay. image

What grade does it look to you?

What's going on with the '5' in the date?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • EF40 due to wear on obverse head, left hand, left leg and reverse eagle's breast and left leg. Certainly an upgrade from VF, you should be happy with the coin.

Can you get better pics of the date? The 5 looks interesting.

I recently started a set of these on VF. I'm going to say, without much conviction, high end XF. I just don't know if there is enough skirt line and breast feathers to push it to AU. I will definetly be checking back to see the consensus.

Looks like a little strike doubling or funky toning... coin looks fine to me. And a score at that price.

With my 12x loupe it appears to be either a very, very eerily perfect, right in the middle, edge whack from another coin... or a small strike-through.
    When in doubt, don't.

Since ad4400 and I school each other fairly regularly on grading walkers, I agree with his assessment, high end XF, very close to AU.
Most of the 'wear' on the obverse is actually due to a weak strike, as the 35S is notorious for this (not as bad as some of the S mints from the 40's, though). I base most of my assessment on the eagle's neck feathers, as this area is RARELY affected by strike. I would want to see a little more detail overall, and a little more luster, to make AU. But it is a nice original coin, with luster present, and a very nice pick up for the price paid. This is a very tough date to find in true full AU. I see a lot more Unc's of this date than AU's; but the same can be said for a number of the mm issues from the 1930's.

All I can say is your lucky I was fishing in a different lake. I like it and agree high EF with a chance of low AU.

XF-45 from the photos. See the breast, skirt lines and luster remaining in the protected areas. The hand is flat, but the head of liberty is well struck.. The reverse is a little weak. My opinion : it's about as natural as they get.
I wouldn't get it slabbed, but that's me.

When PCGS started the "Everyman" Registry set and I had a few free gradings, I sent it in.
    They said XF40.
    When in doubt, don't.

    Very cool.
I still like it and I still think the "5" is cool and weird at the same time image

I stand by my original XF45 assessment.....maybe they downgraded it a bit for the weak central strike detail?
On the bright side, it should easily sticker image

  • Dennis H----- I'm late to the party on this one but I agree with the PCGS XF40 grading. I was told just the other day that I was extremely hard on the Walkers. That made me feel very good.

The 35S Walker is one of my favorite "sleeper" coins in the series. You did "VERY WELL" for 8 bucks and change.

AS Walkerguy21D stated, it is extremely hard to find with original skin [ patina] in the AU grade.

For a mid grade set, your coin fits exceptionally well. Congrats on a fine pickup. Bob [supertooth]

Before I peeked at the grade, I was torn between 35 and 40, would have probably guessed 35 to be conservative (dont know the series)
