AFLfan's new acquisitions - Abner Haynes and others!!!

I figured that I would begin a thread with my quest to complete my autographed AFL sets, and various other AFL-related acquisitions. As a manner of explanation, the 1961 Fleer, 1961, 1968 and 1969 Topps sets contain cards of both AFL and NFL players. In these sets I am collecting only the autographed AFL cards, and not bothering with the NFL cards. In the 1970 set I am only collecting autographed rookie cards of guys that played in the AFL. As an example. Dick Post, a rookie in 1967, did not have a card until 1970. At the moment, I am at the following percentages in the completion of my signed sets:

1960 Fleer - 58/132 cards signed - 44%
1961 Fleer - 68/87 cards signed - 78%
1962 Fleer - 76/88 cards signed - 86%
1963 Fleer - 81/89 cards signed (including NNO checklist) - 91%

1961 Topps - 55/66 cards signed - 83%
1964 Topps - 154/176 cards signed - 87.5%
1965 Topps - 147/176 cards signed - 83.5%
1966 Topps - 112/132 cards signed - 85%
1967 Topps - 115/132 cards signed - 87%
1968 Topps - 76/79 cards signed - 96%
1969 Topps - 73/75* cards signed - 97%
1970 Topps - 34/43 cards signed - 79%

* Frank Buncom died on September 21, 1969. His 1969 Topps cards is a second series card. Until I can determine the exact date of release of Topps second series football cards in 1969, I will consider this card to be impossible to have signed.

Here are my most recent TTM successes that came in on Saturday. Signatures cost a $10/card donation fee. I'm very pleased to have these back!

WHOA. How did you get Nick to not personalize? Did you pay him?
  • AFLfanAFLfan Posts: 1,272 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yes, I sent payment of $10/card. But I did not request him not to personalize. Just did it on his own, I guess.

Very nice Todd ... You don't happen to have two of those '69 Sestaks, do you? LOL Would be nice for my set. Probably one of the best defensive tackles to play the game (based on what I have read). Scary ... I see that when he died in 1987 he was the age I am now ... 51!

  • Love the Wahoo McDaniel. How good was the Chief at TTM before he died? What about at indy wrestling shows?
  • AFLfanAFLfan Posts: 1,272 ✭✭✭✭✭
Thanks, Doug. No, unfortunately I only have one of the 1969 Sestak's. But his auto's are out there, just have to look a bit. I sent out a 1969 Bob Griese TTM about a week ago. If/when that one comes back, my 1969 set (AFL only) will be complete!

I'm not sure how good Wahoo was TTM or at wrestling events. I know of two other collectors that have this card signed, and I am sure there were many more over the years. Sorry I can't give more input than that. Thrilled to have it, though!

Thanks, Mike. Yes, the 1967 Wahoo is his only football card, and runs around $50 in raw nm condition. I guess he played football in the fall and wrestled the rest of the year.

A couple of nice 1960 Fleer cards came back in the mail today. Blanche Martin wrote a full page letter about his time in pro football. It is very nice. Sadly, George Sauer is ill and can no longer sign autographs.

Todd ... nice returns. What a shame that Mr. Sauer is so sick. I knew he was ill, but didn't know how sick he was. I sent my '69 card to him on April 4, 2009 and am still waiting for a reply.

When did you send yours to him?

I have been pretty busy lately, and haven't had time to scan and post my recent acquisitions, so I am going to catch up now! I have added some nice signed cards via TTM attempts, and I got the Biletnikoff's done through the recent GTSM show:

But my greatest additions of some time came on Friday. I am friendly with several Chargers of the AFL days, adn they know that I collect. So Paul Lowe called me up and I went to visit with him. For various reasons he said that he wanted to offer me the following two trophies from his playing days. The first is his 1960 team rushing leader trophy from the one year that the Chargers were in Los Angeles. The second is an award that he was given by the Pro Football Hall of Fame for being named to the All-Time All-AFL team. We agreed upon a price, and I am thrilled to now have these in my collection!

  • I wrote to George Sauer in August of 2008 and I got that same response back about a month or so later. So, apparently it has been going on for some time. Hopefully it is nothing life threatening, and more just something that prevents him from writing.

Great stuff, Todd! Seeing the Blanche Martin card reminded me of this article:

Blanche Martin: Something Special On And Off The Field

As of last year, when the article was written, he was still practicing dentistry at age 72 "...two days a week at the prison in Coldwater, two more in Carson City and one in the Ingham County jail."

One of the things that pleases me most about the Lowe plaques is that for about six months I have been working on collecting a set of autographed cards for the first and second All-AFL teams. I am still missing about 10 cards between the two teams, but I am trying to think of a neat way to display the signed sets along with the plaque that recognizes the teams.

Doug - Still keeping my fingers crossed on Antwine. How long did he take to reply to you?

Thanks Doug. I am missing one, and possibly two from 1969. The one for sure is Bob Griese, and I already have the card in the mail to him. The other is Frank Buncom. Buncom died on September 21, 1969. His 1969 Topps cards is a second series card. Until I can determine the exact date of release of Topps second series football cards in 1969, I will consider this card to be impossible to have signed.

Yep, I'm already clued in on that one. I have all of the Paul Lowe's that I could possibly use and more, but I am excited about Abner Haynes and Billy Cannon. Those guys are huge for me! Fred "the Hammer" Williamson is doing a signing in LA that same weekend. I will send up his 65 Topps to that. I will get Haynes on 64, 65 & 66 Topps, and Cannon on 64, 65 & 66 Topps as well.
