Inside a Chinese counterfeit coin factory

Please forgive me if this has already been posted , i knew about the influx of fakes in the market but this is mind blowing.I cant help but wonder if this is partly why we are seeing large collections appearing for sale , not so much fakes but collectors abandoning ship?

Those pictures have been around for a while.

For all the talk about "scary" Chinese counterfeits, there sure is a lack of close-up high-resolution pictures of the fakes.

But the ones I have seen are not at all convincing under magnification.

Thanks to forums like this one there are guys on hand to spot the fakes,i dont imagine everbody is aware there are so many fakes and not just Morgans.I was quite surprised to see a few UK dies amongst the pics.
They may not appear "scary" to an expert under magnification but the market they are heading for doesnt often offer that luxery.

That's why I collect Jefferson nickels. No one would ever counterfeit 'em. image

Biddles had lots of issues and attacked way too many folks around here (incl our hosts if I recall) and was booted.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

so something that has been going on since coins were probably invented
is scary when the chinese do it? ;-)

see micro O morgans for more information. Perhaps google henning
    nickels. etc.. etc..

    very scary!!!!!!!

Funny how the chinese can fake our currency with no problems but the moment they fake their own money, the government will execute them lol

Whew! For a second there, I thought I saw a Jefferson obverse in that mess.

One thing for certain, EDS strikes are impossible to reproduce, am I correct?

Let me clarify Robb's comment, "No one would counterfeit'em now"! As fc suggests, do a google on Henning Nickel. I'm not sure it was really worht it even back then?

They don't guarantee fake slabs though. I am hoping that PCGS's big news is going to address this issue.

    Leo,
What little I've read of these Chinese counterfeits is they can be too perfect, which leads me to believe EDS is a high probability? Where they do not have it perfect yet is in exact metal make-up and weight. It sure is nice to know counterfeiting probably won't hit the Jefferson series for a while!

I guess you could call that "fiat money" for the coin collector.

I am not sure what is supposed to be scary. Counterfeiters have been around a long time. Artificial toning is a form of counterfeiting. Coin doctors are doing a booming business. What is scary? We have lived with these issues for a long time. Don't be scared, learn all you can. Knowledge is the best weapon. Cheers, RickO

Interesting... I remember someone on these boards posting a thread about this type of operation not long ago.

This is why the old adage of "find a good dealer" is still true. This current crop of counterfeits won't fool anyone experienced who sees the coin in hand. They are nowhere near as deceptive as the 50's Lebanon gold Indians. These are only causing such stir since people seem to think that they can just jump on ebay and buy away with no risks.

If they are good enough to fool NGC and PCGS, my guess is that the vast majority of dealers would be fooled also.
    Very scary.

They sell the fake coins and other antiquities at the Bazaars all over Afghanistan. They're actually quite easy to spot as fakes in hand.

I would expect a lot of these fakes will be brought back by our service men and women.

  • It's a shame that the chinese government won't even stop them from counterfeiting their own currencies. There were a bunch of fake old chinese money there too. You'd think they'd at least care about their own money being counterfeited.

The morgans earlier looked too good to be real. They all had high reliefs and I wonder if these are made of 90% silver.. probably not. I knew of someone who bought some common date Peace Dollars at a flee market. When I looked at them.. they just seem to be weakly struck and too light. He said they were in a bin with some other foreign coins for $2. He thought he had a deal but I told him they must be fake.

Those SLQs look real nice. Like to see a close up.

I've seen these photos over and over and wonder if it is just a scare tactic. ? image
