RIP "BEAR"
But if a dealer wants to present themselves as professional and attract new customers via their website, spell check is probably a good idea.
AND I DO NOT CARE IF THE DEALER HAS NO TEETH AND GREEN HAIR. A LITTLE SCARY
PERHAPS, BUT I WOULD DO BUSINESS WITH THEM.

Great communication (spelling championship belt not required. As long as they spell my name correctly on the check when I sell I'm down with that)

They also like to make assumptions, true or not, on where a thread was meant to go

You mentioned the part of you don't care how they spell. That's why I fixed it for you. I was joking this time. No "potshot whatsoever. I forgot, if it ain't happy talk it's taking a shot, and not allowed. My bad.

did not tdn use the same joke on rwb in an earlier legend thread?
my first reaction to tdn's post was that sounds a lot like legend but
that is not surprising as she is well known and recommended by the
community. so seeing the joke by stman was sorta expected.

And I agree that spelling is not of paramount importance.

By the time I see a nice coin, it has traded hands at least a few times and been marked up accordingly, so by the time I see it, the markup is not reasonable. This is why I have bought two coins in the last two years and a few months.

I disagree. The people that get access are usually the people that work hardest to get access.

I'm curious, if you only found two coins that were reasonably priced, how many did you find (that you would like to own) that were unreasonably priced?

as a very small B&M shop I have some regular customers that get treated just a little different from the rest.
in fact some have become friends.
I have been selling and buying coins from 1998 and to my suprise I have meet more dishonest collectors that dealers. That is sad

This was really well put. After seriously dealing for some 13 years, and collecting for some 50 yrs, I wholeheartedly include Legend, Andy Kimmel, Joe Kaminisky and a few others who fit these requirements. I couldn't care less who is a part owner, etc., and such "enlightening" comments/digs are equally old and annoying. I judge dealers by their integrity and how they deal with me. That's the bottom line.

A fair shake both buying and selling. A nice "Hello" before a deal and a "Thank You" after the deal goes a long way also.

Andy, I think you're wrong. This is a busines; it's all about the money. People who spend the most money are the ones who get first shot at the coins I described.

I found three other dealer coins (and one auction coin) I would like to own during this time, but their prices to me appeared to be excessive, so I passed on them. Of my two purchases, one was an auction coin, while the other was a dealer coin.

Jeff, I disagree about any generalizations regarding who gets first shot at the best coins. Often, it is a matter of who has certain coins on their want lists. I know of many great coins that go to clients who spend far less than others.

Mark, I couldn't agree with you more (and no disrespect to you Jeff).
My customers/collectors that work mutually with me to establish a good relationship of trust and respect will get first shot and a fair deal for us both. The $ amount doesn't matter whatsoever. If you help me keep current with your want list and understand the preferences you have for a coin such as toning, etc. I will work my butt off to do my best for you. It's all about a working relationship where we both succeed.
Ken, you're so right a thank you both ways is very meaningful as well.

As a professional employer, what happens when you get a resume with poor spelling and structural mistakes?
That being said, Albert Puhols applies to work at your company and you have a softball team, you might not care as much.
I think it's less filling AND tastes great.
I used to "work" very hard at getting "first shot" at coins for years - would call the Monday after EVERY major show to inquire what had come available from my primary dealer at the time. Was offered first shot at many coins simply by being the "bird in hand".
Calling it work is a joke - it was alot of fun.

Tradedollarnut, I can empathize with your frustrations, it's brutal out there. FWIW, I buy all my rare and expensive coins from a dealer who simply goes by, "Guido." Find him at Augostino's, Elmwood Park, Harlem at Grand, back table, most nights...

Hey! I like that one!
It is often accompanied by 'Lack of preparation on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.'
And if the situation were reversed, how should a collector decide which dealer to offer "a first shot at new material"?
I mention this specifically because I'm wrestling with this very issue. Does a collector owe anything to any dealer if he wants to shop a coin around before he entertains offers? I say no, he doesn't.
Therefore, why should a collector "expect" first shot at anything, unless he is financially-tied to a specific dealer?
I knew it would happen.
<< <i>If people do not have the time to proof read their own work, why would they expect anyone else read it? >>
Funny... how would you (or anyone else) even know whether or not it was proof read UNLESS you actually read it? Kind of ironic, no?
Anyhoo... all I ever want from a coin dealer is nice coins at fair prices... a friendly attitude is also nice... but not a requirement...just as long as they are not nasty or mean spirited... (a shower before the show and not having beans or cabbage the nite before are also helpful qualities)...
...and for the record... all I want from a coin collector is a modicum of respect and that they clean their hands before leaning on my cases
...again... a friendly attitude is also nice... but not a requirement... just as long as they are not nasty or mean spirited... (PS... also helps if they realize that the coins in my boxes are all in order by date... is it so hard to keep it that way?) (a shower before the show and not having beans or cabbage the nite before are also helpful qualities)...
Rumor has it that Legend has hired a former Mint Director from a certain South American country to direct their international operations and run spell-check. As a gesture of goodwill they will have a special on coins of the ancient Aztec city of CHIIE.
that's precious.
