Fake S VDB on ebay...who bids on these things?

Just saw this one tonight, up over $400, mint mark isn't anywhere near close- I don't even think the whole coin is real, let alone just an added mint mark. See it Here item # 280464234214

The date is way wrong also...

I agree- Who bids on these things, especially after the Chinese counterfeit issue hit all of the main publications?

doesn't surprise me. I've seen ones that say fake in the listings go for several hundred bucks. That's still cheap enough for a scammer to buy it and then later sell it for $1000+ as a legit coin.

    That is a horrible counterfeit.

I just noticed he also has a 1931-S and 1922 no D up for sale as well. The 22 plain looks off as well and I don't think I would take a chance on the 31-S either. They must be starting to articifially age/wear the cents now- oddly enough I was just mentioning the other day to someone that if the Chinese got into copper they could probably do better than their non-silver silver coin copies at fooling people as copper was relatively cheap in the production costs for them.

He sold a 09-S that looks similar and got a "nice coin" feedback. Doesn't look too nice through my glasses. Ouch!

Seller emailed me back he is pulling the listing ( at least that's what he told me ). I was the third person to tell him it was a counterfeit

In checking his feedback he had purchased legit Lincolns so apparently knows his copper.
He also, in searching far back, had purchased from a Dealer known for selling counterfeit/fake coins (and, the seller listed them that way). That is probably his source although we won't know as the specific item is no longer in the database.

I have that page/item at $310. I clicked on the bidding history and I noticed every bidder is listed as "private listing - bidders' identities protected." That inspires a lot of confidence.

I too asked him to have a dealer look at it. Also indicated that it was a fake.

He sent me two emails and this is the last:

I TRIED TO TAKE IT OFF BUT IT DID NOT WORK SO ILL TELL THE WINNER AND CANCLE TRANS THANKS FOR YOUR HELP I WISH I HAD MORE SMARTS WHEN IT CAME TO THIS BUT I DONT. IM SORRY

    - baseball21riding

I'll respond to him that I too will contact the buyer.

The only way I can do that is if they leave public feedback. Mostly a bluff. We'll see.

Not only is the date horribly off, it doesn't show near the same wear as the rest of the coin. It is so different it almost looks photo-shopped onto the coin...

if you are a underbidder in auction,

you can do a search by bidder (you) and see who won that auction, if you hit the completed button

Well it closed at nearly $750!

Yep, looks like the usual Chinese garbage.

Why do stupid people bid on a pig in poke like this? That's not even close.

No, that's part of the Chinese copper aging process that is yet to be profected. I saw a good number of pieces with this kind of "aging" at the EAC convention last year.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

So much for him pulling the auction...it closed at $745. Hope the winner used PP funded with a credit card. This is an example of one of the newer Asian fakes. They are getting gradually better with the artificial aging but still don't have the fonts dialed in.
