  • Posting image below for balance. Am avoiding discussion on financials/politics as this IS NOT what this board is for. FYI, the BIS says there is around $1.2 quadrillion ($1,200 trillion) of financials that need to unwind. A mere $1.2T is small beans and see what that caused yesterday (image below).

Damn. Now I had to subscribe to this thread
  • These might not be the best investment but also 100k mintage isn't exactly a super high number either. 20 years from now there will be all new collectors who will be evry new to the St gaudens UHR and once they are intrigued with it's history will pay good money for these imo. out of the gold coins avalible bullion or not the UHR is easily the best and most beautiful coins out there. Plus it's designed by a true sculpter and you can't really top that.image

imageI bought a set at $1189 and I'm glad I did. It's the most beautiful coin this country ever produced and the fact that it contains a full ounce of 24K pure gold don't hurt it any.

  • << <i>I like the coin. And I don't agree it doesn't look gorgeous in hand. I have a number of modern golds, silvers and platinums and I think the UHR is the best looking of all.

The Mint was creative with the UHR's proportions and dished shape, retro with a beloved design, and the final quality is better than ever. Who cares if it changes in value a little either way? Let's go back to talking about coins we love. How can you not love the UHR?

it wasn't the Mint who was creative it was St Gaudens who created this masterpiece. the Mint was able to execute the mintage properly this time as apossed to the washed out versions from before. If you look at the book that was provided with the coin from the Mint and check out the plastar model that St Gaudens created You will see that THIS UHR IS EXACTLY IDENTICLE!! unlike the previous Versions. Although the old ones do have a very high relief but it still wasn't struck as intended. If the majority of coin collectors actually did there reaserch and history on this coin. They would soon learn that this wasn't just some creeative mint bullion design.. It literaly was and still is the greatest most beautiful coin EVER MINTED ANYWHERE PERIOD.. I'm fortunate enough to be able to hang on to the three I have but I regret only being able to aquire only three.. Anyway yes I belive these will have large premiums in the future..image

    I love thread archeology.

It gives those of us who posted things the opportunity to decide if we are a fool or a genius.

Too bad we cant do thread "time travel" and read our pearls of wisdom that will be posted in three years................................
  • I honestly think that this coin will be a huge sleeper hit.

    Why?

Because of the fact that it was only released for one year.

So what if the mintage is around 100k, it was only released for one year and that says something..

Think about all the coins today with low mintages but they've been coming out for years.

Id say if you have a nasty bullion grade $20 liberty or saint laying in a drawer it would be a good move to trade/swap/sell and buy a UHR in the Mint Packaging.

    Im thinking of doing this.................

not much downside and a lot of potential long term upside.

That sounds like good advice. I will do just that.

I love this coin, but gotta say I don't think it will command a huge premium going forward. I hope I'm wrong, but they just sold too many of the dang things. I'm hanging on to mine, nonetheless.

I have two. I only bought the second one from the mint on the last day of sale because I wanted a 70 not a 69 which my first one was. The second one is perfect as far as I can see. But I have been wrong in the past.
  • I sent mine back to the mint, I think the money is better spent in a old coin.

What will happen in the future with the 2009 UHR issue will depend on many factors.

What if the mint decides to do a version that is the full diameter of the standard $20 and of usual thickness, essentially using the same design? I think this alternative issue would be more desirable simply from the larger size and better display of the high relief design. I actually hope they would consider doing this even though I have NO information to suggest that this is in the works. I believe it would take a year or two just to get all of such a program together. Plus, getting enough gold blanks to produce these has been shown to be problematic. If they make some sort of additional issue, it could depress the price of the original issue on one hand, or increase demand to have both pieces on the other hand. I also think that a number of the 100K or so mintage has gone out of the country and I expect supplies to diminish over time.

My crystal ball says that the 2009 UHR will remain popular, will carry a modest premium over bullion or melt price, and continue to do so for many years. None of us know what the US economy and gold prices will do in the future, but I think gold will continue to increase in value relative to the value of the US dollar.

  • The best answer is obtained by taking one to your local B&M dealer or into a coin show...............good luck on getting much if anything over melt for MS69 or raw coins.
