I will post mine when I get back home from Vacation.

On the issue of Skilow, my SS called me out last year as well for saying my gift sucked (look at last years thread for Skilow vs 1.0) . I really had to scramble to find something for my SS last year as he collected things I didn't so I had to go the online route.

It really made me not want to participate this year as I can tell that some just get jealous, I am happy Bunker liked his gift this year.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
  • I will respond to this post, since you actually showed some thought on my end.

Thank you, I am thankful for the gift!

My "joke" that my "ss sucked" was compared to other santas who seems to really take some time to get something on the list of what their reciepient wanted, not settling for the, if you CANNOT find any of the above options. (A Will Blackwell/N. O'Donnell/Tommy Maddox, etc Auto would have been better, not monetarily(like most of you are thinking, but actually fulfilling my "wish")

As for the cheap angle, I took on two recipients last year, one who was down on his luck, and didn't expect anything in return!

Here was my list given to Matt:

Andy Van Slyke minor league cards, or cards I'm missing on my registry.
    Steelers RCs/Autos
if all else fails, unopened NFL packs prior to 1990

    To all those attacking:
Wouldn't you at least try to include a pack with a decent Steeler RC, at worst 1989 Score?

    Here is what I recieved

    1980 rack
    1987 rack
    1982 Cello
    (no Steelers RCs)

Thanks to all those who PMed me, but I gave these to my nephew to have fun with, and hopefully continue the hobby!

Again to my SS, no hard feelings( we are all good!), just to all those who chose to attack before hearing a full story!

Happy New Years to my SS

  • My last response, I used to think skilow was a douche. My opinion of him has changed through some private transactions. He's not a bad guy. Maybe a little outspoken but a nice guy and fellow collector.

    Cut him some slack.

P.S. Check some old group rips I did to see the hostility.
  • Thanks for the kind words LSU, my opinion of you has also changed with the private transaction! (NHL cards are still a good group rip, with the right selection!)

I meant no ill will to my SS, I am jealous of how much thought others SS put into their "gift". Am I disappointed my SS reverted to the "if all elses failes option", with no thought to the previous 2 options?

    YES

But am still thankful for what I got!

Why does this board have to have a "mob" mentalitly and jump all over ANYTHING in question?

As Mr King said, "can't we all just get along?"

I am the last one here to pile on.. ever,

and my comment still rings true.. maybe even more so now..
your full story did not make your comments any more reasonable..worse even
  • Bob, you know I am one to pile on when the situation warrants piling on. I have said stupid stuff on here before and other forums but was forgiven. If I am not piling on and actually defending the guy, that should tell you something .

Last post on here for real this time image

It takes a man to understand the situation, and realize how it feels to be attacked by the mob!
  • Took my sweet time to scan as I've been traveling....

Thanks Santa!! Twins are my home town team!

  • Skilow ,

This is only my opinion . First , Im sorry you are disappointed with what you got . I believe the reason people were attacking you
is the way you showed your displeasure . Saying "your SS sucked " wasnt really appropriate . I think what you should have done
is say thanks , show a scan or 2 and left it at that . I think you saying that just rubbed people the wrong way , thats all.

I have not talked to you personally so I hold no judgement as to you being a nice guy or not

Just my 2 cents...........Happy New Year............Please dont drink and drive

"Here was my list given to Matt"

Andy Van Slyke minor league cards, or cards I'm missing on my registry.
    Steelers RCs/Autos
if all else fails, unopened NFL packs prior to 1990

maybe there was no minor league van slyke stuff.. there is only one now on EBAY and no completed..
and I don't know who the eff the decent collectible steelers rookies were to look for them..
they sucked for most of the 80's I can't tell you anyone on the team.. Bubby Brister??

you got exactly what was on your list and embarrassed the fellow that sent you it.. that is a weak move..
by an even weaker minded person... after originally saying you didn't get what you asked for.

"I received 3 80's NFL rack packs and 1 cello.
Not exactly what was on my list at all, but thanks SS"

what would Roberto Clemente do?? please.. he would have done just what I did.. he would stick up for the little guy who is being wronged

you are a cry baby who didn't get dollar for dollar?? saying you gave them away was an even more classless comment..
as if to say it wasn't worth your time.. the last I checked.. unopened material was pretty popular around here.
  • MorgothMorgoth Posts: 3,950 ✭✭✭
Look its not a mob mentality. You stated you are jealous and unhappy with what you SS got you, even though it was on your list. You then gave it away like it wasn't worth anything. The whole exercise was to give and not care what you got back.

There are times when just keeping things inside your head is better than typing on a keyboard.

I don't know how you weren't trying to be hurtful or confrontational by saying your SS gift sucked.

That being said I don't view you as being a bad person just didn't think before you typed and maybe thought you were trying to be funny.

I agree.. I am not saying he is a bad person either... just asking you to think about what you say before you say it..
there is someone else on the receiving end of those things.
you say can't we all get along.. that comment starts at home first.

For the record, my offer to trade you Steelers stuff for what you received was genuine. I responded to your PM asking me to tell you if I was serious and you said you would tell me what you received.

While I am happy that your nephew received the cards, I wish you had told me that a few days ago before I spent a couple hours scouring my collection for some nice Steelers stuff to send you and going through ebay to watch some Steelers autographed rookies to buy for you.

All's well that ends well, I guess. But do I get my time back?

The results of what I've ripped...6 or 8 racks left...I'm probably done though.

These are just a few of my favorites...a lot of star cards with gem potential to weed through as well. I thought the ratio of Mattinglys was pretty nice!

Thanks again SS, it was fun to rip for the first time in a long time!

Nice rip BunchOBull. Being nine years old in the summer of 1984, that's one of my favorite sets, and seeing those cards always brings back great memories. I fully expect to one day buy some boxes from 1982, 1983 and 1984 to rebuild those sets. That might not be the most efficient way to build fairly cheap sets, but it will sure be a lot of fun!

Not piling on as I called out the original post several pages ago.

I just don't understand why, in this season of giving and reflection, you would find it necessary to publicly call out your SS AND to say that your SS sucked. That's downright wrong and sounds of nothing more than sour grapes. Reading your explanation and seeing your original "wantlist" makes it even more damning as you got what was on your list.

Now, you question the manhood of anyone that feels that you were out of line by suggesting that anyone that doesn't understand YOUR side is NOT a man.

I don't care about whether you have a track record or whether Bill thinks you're an alright guy. You've demonstrated, that in the spirit of giving, you are expecting of more and are an ungrateful individual. Further, by stating that you offed the gift to a nephew is probably even more insulting and hurtful to the person that took the time to forward you a gift. Not that I care, but it would really be interesting to know who your recipient was and what they received.

As far as I'm concerned, this exercise was more about giving and not worrying about what I received. It's not like we were exchanging items worth thousands.

I was involved in a SS exchange on a private site and made significant efforts to procure an oddball backed T206 Southern Leaguer in EX condition as well as a first printing 1911 hardcover book by Christy Mathewson and a few early Baseball Digests for my recipient (who I don't know from Adam and he rarely posts on the site). I sent them insured with Signature required. I know they were received and signed for, but the recipient has yet to acknowledge receipt nearly two weeks later. I'm not sure whether he's been busy, didn't care for them or was insulted, but I can tell you it has left an empty feeling and discourages me from wanting to participate again -- not because of what I received, but because I feel my gift may have been unappreciated. YOUR SS probably feels even worse after your insulting remark. So, rather than being so self-serving and trying to explain it away, why not put yourself in the sender's shoes and understand how you must have made them feel.

An apology is in order, not excuses!

Skilow's never going to be happy with anything, period. He will whine and complain and try his best to justify being a baby until the end of time.
  • Oh, so now this is MY fault too?

Skillow - I never dealt with you in any transaction, or shared words with you.

A Secret Santa gift is that.... a Secret Sanata git.

Since the 1st two of your list couldn't be fulfilled, your SS gave you the 3rd.

I didn't go into this thinking about having my wantlist filled by my SS, I went into it just being able to appreciate something to open on Christmas from a
    fellow collector.

I wouldn't have cared if my SS sent me 1989 Topps baseball rack packs, I would've enjoyed them regardless.

I'm sure others would agree it isn't about the gift, but it's the fact that someone sent you something

And I appreciate my SS sending me something.

If my SS didn't send me anything, I wouldn't have had a thing too open for Christmas morning.

I was/am skilow's Secret Santa and have resisted posting for many reasons. Mostly because of a great quote I once heard -- When you have the choice to be right or be kind, always choose being kind.

I’ll try to be short and sweet.

Skilow, is it really possibly that you do not realize how I could be disappointed (your words from your last post) in your actions? I’ll tell you.

    a) You first wrote: I received 3 80's NFL rack packs and 1 cello.
Not exactly what was on my list at all, but thanks SS.

Disappointment #1 – a flat out lie. It was on your list, even you said so.

    b) You then wrote it sucked.

Disappointment #2 – first you write thanks, then you write it sucks.

For the record, I went to bbce and purchased a nice assortment of unopened 80s football that was on the list. The story should end there.

Again, a prosperous 2010 for everyone.

P.S. Still trying to put together my childhood set of 72 and 73 baseball. If you have commons for trade, let me know.

    To which skilow responded:

<< <i>He still hasn't posted, and If he is disappointed.

Well I don't understand how, and if he is I will try to make it right with him! >>

Can you really be this ignorant or selfish?

You don't get it, do you? First, it was a rhetorical question. Second, your response to it actually demonstrates that YOU are the problem and YOU still refuse to accept it.

To paraphrase your own words, I guess "it takes a man to understand." But you sir, do not UNDERSTAND!

Gifts are gifts . . . They're NOT eBay transactions. There isn't anything about making them "right." And when you get a gift, you don't go about posting that you're disappointed. I certainly hope between now and you're next breath, you figure out a way to develop some of the most rudimentary social skills... Perhaps that's the meaning of the "skilow" screen name...

Unbelievable??? How exactly did you become wounded? And in what way is this anyone's fault but your own?

That you can think both of your original comments and the fact that you gave away the gift are anything but harmful and mean, is beyond the pale.

Like I said... til the end of time.

However, I am grateful to be able to view the kindness and generousity of this boards members. I still consider myself fortunate and have my family (ok - now wipe the tears away-sniff)

Santa keeps on giving!!! Another package waiting for me when I got home today. Opened it up, and I was floored. A custom made wooden storage box for my Maravich master set. Images of Pistol Pete cards on the top and every side. Very well constructed, with individual slots for each card, including the tallboys. Pete, thanks so much, it is awesome. And this is on top of what Santa sent earlier, which was 11 cards for my various registry sets.
