Guess the Morgan grade - Grade Revealed!

astroratastrorat Posts: 9,221 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was playing with my camera and thought I would share a pair of images of the coin now that it is back from PCGS. So ... how was the coin graded ... or was it?

Edited to add: The "scratch" beneath NU in UNUM is a small plastic thread encapsulated along with the coin.

The grade is at the bottom of this post, so don't scroll too far if you still want to guess! image

Okay ... the grade is: PCGS-66. Yes, the coin upgraded from the old ANACS cache where it was graded 65. The scuffs on the face are accentuated in the photo.

I really like the look with the slight cameo and toning.

The grade, I would give it a 65.

MS65 with a chance of 66 depending on the overall in-hand look and the depth of the chatter on the obverse. From the image, I don't think it would get PL/DMPL.

I would LOVE it as a 65 but would be neutral on it as a 66.

I don't know how they are grading them now, but I had a few CCs in PC 5 with fewer contact marks on the cheek than this one, so I'd say MS 64. Don't deal with the PL designation.

I am usually kind of neutral on Morgans, but I really like this one. Looks like a 65 all day long from here.

    64. Its a large picture but to me just too much contact to the face. I do not see good obverse PL qualities, though the reverse might qualify. To those grading 66, can you please get temp jobs as graders at PCGS when I submit my coins? Generous would not be a good enough term.

65+ -- possible 66 depending on how deep the scratch in the right obverse field is.

    MS-64, Premium Quality, no P-L.

If it's in an MS-65 holder, it's in the lower range for the grade because of the location of the marks on the face.

Too many hits on the cheek and eye for a 66, methinks... scraches under UNUM slight detractors, other minor nicks between the N in United and the N in One on the reverse... a strong 64, though I'm not confident enough about the PL... 65 wouldn't surprise me.

Great guesses, everyone. The range is what I expected and exactly why you need to see a coin in hand to effectively grade it.

    Hints:

    1. It is NOT a PL or DMPL. It does have frosty luster but minimal reflectivity.
    2. It was graded previously by the "old small holder" ANACS as MS-65
    3. It currently resides in a PCGS holder with an MS grade.

64 (or with the way they have been so hesitant to grade anything with color lately, they might have Genuined it for QC...)

I bet it pulled a 66. I agree with some who've said the hits on the face are badly located, but most of the cheek is clean, clean, clean ... and the fields look really nice ...

I would be absolutely shocked if that coin is graded MS64. Those "huge" marks on the cheek are big because the images are big. They are relatively few, they are light, and I might even argue that the dead center of the prime focal area is just to the right of them.

This coin is a solid 65 (PCGS), and Lane's coin is certainly cleaner.

    image

Now, could his coin be in a 64 holder? Yes, but if so, it is certainly undergraded. I maintain that the piece is a very, very solid 65+
