If you were single what % of your income would go to coins?

renman95renman95 Posts: 7,037 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'd live bare bones, an extension cord to some nice beach to power my cooler and computer. A sleeping bag too. All the rest goes to coins and my personal Brinks truck.

  • Less than now, since I'd have to pay 100% of the mortgage, insurance, electric, phone, etc all by myself.
The only reason I got married was so that I could buy more coins.
  • Or what percentage of your coins would go towards being single again?

image I'm at about 75% of my disposable income. Mostly American bullion (Eagles, Spouses and Buffalos).

Ive never been much of a ladies man anyway.

    Edited to add:

I must add that the beach would be a nice surfing beach, water about 80 degrees requiring no wetsuits.....something like Playa Grande near Tamarindo, Costa Rica...just thinking off the top of my head.
  • The part that I don't pay to lawyers, alimony, and child support. I think I'll just stay married. I think I can buy more coins that way.

I'll admit it. Probably zero. When I was single I spent 100% of my income on important things like
    women and beer.

If I became divorced, my coin purchasing would grind almost to a halt. Having someone to pay half the living expenses makes a big difference in how one lives.

it is more fun to look for silver at the local banks then it is buying a
    1200 dollar lib half eagle.

i get the same amount of happiness from finding a 90% silver dime.

The more appropriate question is what percentage of my coins would I have to give up to be single again. image

I would say about 20% all of my life, I'm 56 now and that 20% let me have a great time collecting coins,

Honestly, probably more than now. But then, if I were single, I would have never met my wife, and I would have never been inspired to go back for my master's, get a better job, work hard, make more money, etc.... AND, my WIFE's the one who bought me that 1909-s Lincoln to fill that hole in my childhood set, getting the whole ball rolling again. So ow that I think about it, I would either spend a greater percentage of less money, or none at all.
  • MidLifeCrisisMidLifeCrisis Posts: 10,563 ✭✭✭✭✭
Probably about the same percentage as now.

Coins are nice toys, but I like other things too.
  • Maybe 40-50% now as I stopped buying firearms, I put alot away in my 20's now that I just turned 30 the only debt I have is my house and that is being paid down quick, a few bills and everything else was paid in cash so the money comes in every other Thursday and is gone buy Saturday. My wife luckily doesn't have too expensive of tastes so date night we go to Chili's or Fridays and that is about it. Max the 401k and the rest goes to coins and currency. Don't get me wrong, I have real nice safety net just in case, but the rest is disposable in my eyes. Forget the wife, if she wants something she can go get a job. No kids, 4k sq. ft. house that never stays clean so forget her.

  • I'm single and nearly all of my money is going to college, mortgage, phone, et cetera. I seldom eat so that leaves a few bucks for coins and bullion every once in a while.

Sure is nice being single, no new kithchen cabinets, or new rugs, or new wall paper, etc, etc.....
Getting divorced was more costly than getting hitched.
Looking in my fridge, which consists of mustard, bread, and beer, I would say a large % goes to coins or bullion image

  • I've had times when 100% of my disposable income was dedicated to coins for months on end and I've had times when that percentage dropped to zero. Now that I have a long term girlfriend (and I think I'm going to keep her) I'd be surprised if the number ever went beyond 40% or so again. Too many other considerations. Oh, and this one really like jewelry.

    You guys really funny.
If I were single, young, and earning a modest but tolerable income outside of the "coins for sale" realm, I would make a budget, which would allow for savings of at least 10%/yr, assigning a percentage of that to a long term collection (not more than 25%), and buy only a few very special coins a year. Collecting coins is a hobby which happens to bring some appreciation over time. It is no substitute over a long time for other carefully selected investments.( I know that gold has gone up and RE down in the short run but this year is not forever) If you are lucky you will accumulate more resources and the percentage allocated to coins can increase as you have more expendable income. Remember non special coins may not be as liquid as you think or take time to dispose of at the price you think it should be worth.
BTW, when you get a spouse, select carefully; she/he may turn out to be your most precious asset or your greatest liability.
    Happy Holidays

I'd be able to do maybe 25%. I see it as an investment as well as a hobby.

I'm single, and I don't put a whole lot in. A lot of what really excites me is outside of my budget, so I spend a lot more time waiting for the right coin to come along than buying a lot of stuff I don't 100% love just to have a new coin. I put a lot more into savings, which I dare say will help me more in the future than coins.

I am single, and it is below 10%, which is a portion of my disposable income. The % seems to be dropping over time as I become more patient (and the easy holes in my typeset have been filled)....Mike

When I was single, and had a good oil company income, something along the lines of 50-70% of monthly take went into my hobby.

I'm divorced, and my house is paid for. However, I've got 2 kids, one going to private High School and one going to a private University, so that is the main money pit right now (I did save up for that for years though). I do have a girlfriend, so there is some definite outlay on bright sparkly stuff and nice meals etc., but in the grand scheme of things it's not too bad. I'd say about 25% of my gross income is going to collectibles right now, with it split about 80 - 20, space collectibles to coins.
  • I had more money married.....now with most of the kid costs on me (I don't mind), I have very little disposable income.....so it used to be around 15% to 20% and now it's more like 5% image
