do you own a Wonder Coin? And, if so, what does it look like?

True. Most Type 1 1976s are lackluster and flat. Yours has booming luster, especially evident on the obverse.

I've seen 1971-D and 1978-P Ikes with killer luster, but not your 1976.

Very few "Richard Green Coll" Silver Washington slabs remain as most of his set was sold privately and then later resold by Heritage (but before the coins hit the Heritage auction the RG inserts were all changed to regular blue holders for reasons unknown). I was fortunate enough to "cherry-pick" roughly (10) or so coins from the amazing set before all of the remaining coins were sold in tact. This one is technically about as nice a 1943-P quarter as I have ever seen (and much prettier in person). And, for those of you that knew RG, you know that he pursued a "blazing white" set... very unusual for him to keep a toned coin - he only kept a few of the finest he came across over the years.

Although I know that a "wonder coin" is supposed to grade MS-67 or higher, this is a wonder coin for me. It is a 1795 Plain Edge (S-76b) large cent in PCGS MS-62, brown which makes it far better than most early cents you will see. The coin is a full Unc., and it even has a trace of red showing above Ms. Liberty's head. Sheldon stated that there are many Mint State examples of this coin, but a fair number of the examples I have seen had mint caused planchet problems that caused me to say that they were less than wonderful. I also noted in the Noyes book that none of the coins that were pictured there were full red. So perhaps no full blown red "wonder coins" exist of this date.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

A very discerning collector indeed. Cheers, RickO

This one is pretty wonderful, 1870 A Prussia 1 Silver Groschen in MS68, it's the only one in the entire series so far. But there are a lot of darkside coins yet to be graded.
