2009 Lincoln Log Cabin Cents Milk Spots

I bought a $25 box of rolls of 2009 Lincoln Log Cabin Cents and it seems like a lot of the coins have little milk spots on them. Is this common for these cents? What is the max grade a coin can get if it has a very tiny milkspot on it with virtually no contact marks?
Thanks,
Joseph

The pics are below, I guess I am asking if a coin with these kinds of spots can get an MS 67 or MS 68? Also, if I was to send the coin in to PCGS, what do you think it would come back as?

"Milk spots" are normally associated with Silver products....I would say that on cents they would be called "Dreck Spots?" image

Regrettably, I have seen these spots on new rolls of lincolns over the last few years, at a minimum.
I don't think the 2009 lincolns will prove to be an exception

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Nobody is addressing the question, which is:

Do mint created spots like this limit the grade?

I'm curious too. I don't know if this is part of the grading standard or not.

It's a good question as far as numeric grades: Is is all about a search for a spot-free coin or do 'we' not care?

Started in earnest with the 2005 production..probably a change in the final wash of the copper/zinc sheets. It's why so few MS 68-69 cents exist. And NO, nothing can be done to remove them.

  • So what is the highest grade this coin can get at PCGS would you say?
    Thanks,

Can't tell from your scans, but if it was an ASE with no other flaws and a perfect strike, PCGS would probably down grade it by 2 points..

    MS-67

    "Milk Spot - 67"

    Are spots grade limiting?

Yes they are. Knocked my MS69 SAE down to an MS67!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

This phenomenon on the newer Lincoln cents is sometimes referred to "skim". image

Not sure what the max grade would be on one of these coins,
but it begs the question...if the coin has ugly spots, why would
you WANT to get it slabbed? It won't be as high as a problem-free,
    clean example.

Yes, most of the new Lincolns I receive in change have these ugly
spots on them too. It's sad.

Maybe my brain is thinking incorrectly, but I think these spots are from the pre-washing of the metal strips prior to the planchets being punched out. If that is the case, the simple fix would be forced air or compressed air drying after they're washed.

Why would they be interested in the quality of a product they lose money making and serves little to no purpose anyway? Maybe if they get sloppy enough their boss will finally wake up and let them quit wasting our money.

Try an acetone rinse followed by DI water and then alcohol with a forced air dry. May not work, but it could. Cheers, RickO
