Fakes or Real? Lot's of photos inside. Updated 12/2

CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,254 ✭✭✭✭✭
I proved without a shadow of a doubt in my last thread with a questionable Morgan Dollar that I don't have a clue what I'm talking about with these puppies. So, in light of that, I defer to the experts on the board. Below are photos I just took of the lot of coins my Pop purchased a while back. The weight of the coins is above each photo. My scale isn't all that sensitive so I'd say put a + or - 1 gram to be safe. Which ones are real and which ones are fakarooni's? Thanks for your help.

wow, is your scale accurate? A lot of your answers are right there in the weights...and you and I are pretty equal on our knowledge of Morgans image

The last four are obvious fakes. The other ones look ok at first glance.

  • The last 4 definitely look like fakes. Liberty has the 1921 look to her as does the reverse.

Is it the mint marks that make fake? That's where I see the difference.

The last 4 are fake. They all even use the same reverse dies. The rest look real. The design of 1921 is different from the previous years, and can look like a cheap imitation of an earlier Morgan, mostly because it is.

The last 4 are all fake.

edited: The fakes are not marked as such on the coin. So, are you going to mark them replica or copy?
Or are you going to destroy them?

Wow... disastrous acquisition. Where did he come by these coins? Cheers, RickO

He got them online at some place called Proxybid. I'd not heard of it before.

I have letter punches and I'm going to punch C.F. into Liberty's face on the ones that come out as being fake. Pop still wants to keep them but I want to make sure no one else gets taken by them in the future.

Last 4 are fake for sure. I'd like to see the first one in hand to be certain about that one though.

dang lots of fakes from what people are saying BUT why don't you do the ring test?

Put the morgan on your fingertips and tap it on the side with a coin. It should do a riiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg sound while something that is clad, etc will do riiiiiiiinnnng

The last four have correctly been ID as fakes, having the same reverse die. For those new to this, there are many signs, but one of the most obvious is the large die gouge at the top of the left wing on the eagle which extends from the top of the breast out into the wing feathers. In addition there is an amazing absence of details in the lower breast and tail feather areas. Anybody fooled by these 4 coins shouldn't be buying Morgans raw, period, IMO.

Just remember that most of us over age 60 can no longer hear that ring!
Sad shame, but hearing does not last a lifetime for most of us.

Proxi-bid is not an auction house but a competitor to eBay

they provide on-line pre-bidding and live (some with live video feed or sound feed)
to auction companies around the country

some are online only but many are live at various locations around the country

to say these were bought from Prox-bid would be like saying
    they were bought from eBay

proxi-bid is the platform not the seller/auction house

I would think the auction house that sold these would be responsible - but not sure about auction laws
or how they would apply to a mainly antique auction house

Top 6 are real from what I can tell, but the last 4 are definitely Asian fakes. Note the identical reverses and incorrect fonts.
