Two error sets on eBay.. one is COINB0Y's "snot nose" set.. the other has a struck-through string or wire still stuck to the coin..

    Link

A search through closed offerings yielded no error sets.. as of this posting..

    Order #33186104 received today.
Not going to open, hoping PCGS will offer L C&C designation, for what that's worth.

    First.. congratulations..

Secondly, they won't.. Folks have already asked and confirmed with them that they won't.. go ahead and open it.. or, if you don't want to believe me, call them and ask..

Hmm.. I'm closing in on my 1000nd post.. I should have a contest or something.. well.. I'll ponder for a while and have a contest after my 1000rd post..

  • hrlaser, Thanks for pointing that other Error out!

I feel vindicated. I got some emails that said it looked like a scratch.

    That's just my bad photography.

The error I have on that coin appears to be the same as that other guys' error. It is a partially buried "hair" from a Die Brush like was suggested here.

Hard to believe that wasn't blown off before it got into the press.

There is no date on my box unless it is hidden in one of the codes somewhere. I would hope PCGS would designate these as a set. It should be easy to do if they received it in the original, unopened mint box.

<< <i>I just opened mine and must say the packaging is fantastic. However, the cents already show some toning in the right light! >>

I'm not sure I'd actually want to do this, but would vacuum sealing the entire package solve the toning issue? Sure would interfere with viewing the thing, but hell, if you have more than one, seal it, leave the other alone, and let nature take its course. Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters? image

I think that the toning that this set could give to the cents over the years will be the "hidden" value of this set. image

Seeing as how my Morgans have more value when toned, methinks you're on to something!

Is there any reason why an unopened box would be more valuable than in opened one?

Probably the same mentality that gives more value to First Strikes than a coin sent a day after the deadline.....

Or there is not switch-a-roo of the Lincolns. Was there a problem with than back when they first came out and being flipped?
  • MsMorrisineMsMorrisine Posts: 36,108 ✭✭✭✭✭
    nah.

the quality of one coin the in set versus a proof obtained through another route was about the same.

I don't recall.... were there proof double dies? were any found in the LC&C sets?

True, but since they don't give any special designation to coins submitted for slabbing from this set, and it's long past the period they would, if they did, but they don't.. if someone only bought one of them and intends to keep it, there's absolutely no reason not to open it.. unless just looking at pictures of what's inside is satisfaction enough..

I only ordered one, after an excruciating wait (if you folks remember the ordering hassles and frenzy, which are detailed waaaaaaaay back in this thread).. and opened it the day it arrived.. since then, whenever it was, I've looked at it a couple more times, and put it back in its shipping box..

My Proof Abe has a tiny tiny pinpoint dimple in the middle of the right side of the field.. I don't know if it's a tiny struck-through-something or what it is.. and I don't care, because I'm not having any of the coins in the set slabbed anyway..

In my opinion, this is one of those special sets, like the 1995 Civil War Proof Sets in the cool "Union" cases, that's worth opening and admiring, and keeping intact..

The only reason I can think of to keep it / them sealed, is if you have more than one, and intend to sell the extras.. you'll probably get a bit more if it's in a sealed mailing box, so potential buyers / bidders will know that no one swapped in inferior coins after opening it..

I can't think of any other reason to keep it sealed..

I just relooked at my set again after a few months. I keep it in a drawer next to the computer. I've saved and packed all the original boxed materials and invoice and I imagine I'll keep it that way for awhile. The invoice still says $60.90 with the S & H. I like relooking at the Gettysburgh Address in Lincoln's handwriting and of course his photgraph. Nice packaging by the Mint and a keepsake I might pass on to one of my grandkids someday.
