GUYS -- read what I said. I based my impressions on the signature not being strong, and the ball being in very used condition. Yes, pristine out-of-the-box Mantle signed balls PSA/DNA certified on Ebay go for a lot more than $200 - $300. But this is a purportedly game-used ball. Which is a kind way of saying that there is a unique backstory that ends up in a scuffed, condition-impaired baseball that has a signature on it. Unless the signature is particularly strong, or the ball is somehow game-used but in pristine condition, the ball that we are arguing about here [for which we don't have a picture or scan] is likely to be nowhere near the condition of anything you typically see on Ebay or anything Mickey Mantle signed in the 1970s, 1980s or 1990s. Yes, game-used balls from 55 years ago do exist, and they do exist in signed, pristine form. But those are 1 out of 100, and I imagine that this example looks like a truly game-used baseball with a decent, but not strong signature.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
I have ball in hand. Does anyone have an example of a "no-loop" signature. It is on an official AL ball with William Harridge Pres. . It is in pretty good condition and the sig is in good condition but it looks a lot different that the modern examples of mickey's sig. You can see a little resemblencein the loops used on the l and e's.
Lets see some pics!!! That ball is worth some coin if it is legit. I am not sure the year that Mantle started signing with the lupes. I hope the sig is real because that is a nice find.

Hi Tommy,
Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but this one was authenticated by James Spence (JSA).
I found this example of an early 50's sig online and it looks a lot like it. He would not leave the ball here so I could make pictures but I am going home to get my camera right now and going to his house to make pictures. I guess the thing for me to do is start an ebay auction using the pictures and get PSA/DNA to do a quick opinion? I will post pictures when I get back.
Here are the pictures. The didn't turn out as good as I wanted. I tried with flash and it was too bright and the ones without flash don't get the sig as well as I'd like. They also don't show the details of the ball as well as I'd like. The ball is an official American League Ball with William Harridge as pres. It has the company (Beach?) that made the ball. The last picture I put this sig alogside an early 50's sig that was graded 10 by PSA/DNA.
Nobody wants to hear their ball is no good and telling this guy his ball is no good could cost you the sale on the car. It's also very likely he knows it's no good and figures who better to pass it off to than a used car salesman. Since you said you're getting him for $15,000 on a $12,000 car, make him think he's getting one over on you by allowing him $500 or so for the ball. You make the sale, and have a unique new story to add to the history of the sock ball.
I stink at this kind of stuff - and don't usually have an opinion - but this does not look like the Micks style of writing - so probably a forgery or clubhouser.
That looks like a early Mantle signature to me. I purchased a few early Mantles a number of years ago and if authenticated..the early Mantle's are very much in demand and will fetch far more than the 2-300 dollars that were mentioned previously!! I would venture a guess that,if authenticated...close to a grand or more might be the correct value of this ball!
I could be wrong though!! Thats why JSA makes so much money!!! LOL
the signature looks a lot like some of the early ones I've found and it looks quite like the one I have pictured next to it. Does JSA do a quick opinion without an ebay auction?
<< <i>i'd send it to Spence just to make sure (too much upside) >>
I would love to send it off to someone, but he wouldn't even let me keep it here to take pictures so I'm sure he wouldn't allow that. He's an older guy and didn't really understand the whole authentication process I was describing as to why I needed the pictures.
I'm not convinced it's not real. There are several positives to the sig, several negatives, but the poor photos really make it hard to say anything more than that.

Im gonna see if he'll bring it back on Monday when he comes in to do the rest of his paperwork. His house was really poorly lit. I tried taking pictures with the flash but it just made the ball a complete white blur. The guy's house reminded me of that house in Silence of the Lambs. It was very uncomfortable and smelled like moth balls. I could have taken it outside I guess.
You guys must have some real beaf with each other. You have been poking him this whole thread. He may deserve it he may not--but it is entertaining... >>
Is the "beaf" real? Or are you two (Win/Vette) just messing around with each other?

he does that in all of my threads and then plays the victim role. I didn't even know they had internet access under bridges but apparently they do.
For a few bucks, you could put the picture on Ebay, do a PSA/DNA quick opinion, and then end the auction early -- and see if they say likely genuine or not

It's a "rookie era" Mantle sig on a ball.

You have to somehow get a legit opinion from either PSA/DNA or Spence.
Another person you could try is a guy that posts over at net 54 named Richard Simon.
He also has a web site devoted to this. Google his name
I think he charges 10.00. He will at least give you a somewhat legit opinion.
Please no one take what I said wrong, I am sure many here can also give an opinion on it.
The fact remains here he will get 50% saying it is legit and 50% that says it is a fake/clubhouse.
