If Steve still has any 1979 unopened hockey boxes, Topps, I have been planning on buying two in mid September.

I don't think they will be sold anytime soon. I think Memory Lane was just looking for a way to attract attention to their booth. Worked for me! I felt like a stalker circling by every 30 minutes sneaking a peek

How come the National hasn't been to L.A. in a while...it has the second largest population in the U.S. I wouldn't mind seeing it there, or San Diego....somewhere west coast!!!!

Those Mantles are magnificent...I was just looking at Spence's registry....he has soooooo many awesome cards!
  • mknezmknez Posts: 1,992 ✭✭✭
I think I heard a price of 6K per cello being quoted for the 55 AA packs. If there is at least 1 PSA 10 as the previous packs have garnered, so you think it's worth the cost?

    Thanx for sharing Curt.

I would like for Steve to crack that box of 73T Lids! I would like one for display. I've collected the proofs from Topps.

    Thanks for posting those pics.

I've never seen an unopened '69 Football wax box before.

Those '55 AA cello's are fantastic. A buddy of mine is there and he told me tonight someone opened a couple of those cello's and got back a PSA 10 on a Hutson, and a PSA 9 on the 4 Horseman card. I don't know if it was from the pics posted here.

The Mantles are stunning, but to nit pick a little, how did the '68 Mantle get a 10? The L-R centering is pretty off. Looks like 60/40. Maybe the card shows zero wear.

Same with the '57 Ted Williams. Great card no doubt but pretty o/c T-B for a 10. It would look fine in a PSA 9 holder, but 10? Really??

I totally agree with a few other posters said about walking around the National. It humbles you. Suddenly your collection looks like crap in comparison to what's out there on the show floor.

    60/40 is OK for a PSA 10:

    morning all!

sorry no pics have been posted. Not spending much time in the room. was at the show until 5 then got ready and attended the Legendary Auctions live auction.

as for the show, I stopped by Steve's booth and decided to pick up 2 very rare items. Steve had 2 OPC hockey "rack packs"...1 from '79/80 the other from '80/81. They are not really rack packs...each has 4 wax packs wrapped in cellophane. First he has had or seen in 20 years. I usually do not get too excited about hockey, but talk about rare! No I will not be opening them. I will post pics when I get home...real cool items.

The '55 All American cellos are awesome. 2 were bought and opened on Weds. The cards were graded and 1 came back a PSA-10. Depending on grade Steve is getting $5,000 or more. Guess I should have picked them up for $1,500 a few years back!

I spoke with Steve and he told me what he had sold. Out of respect for his privacy, I do not think that I should divulge what he sold. Trust me, you would have thought that I took a bottle of viagra when he was telling me. TWANG!!!

I will be buying something and opening it at his booth today. Will let you know what it is and how I do. If you are around today, stop by his booth at 1:00.

While the city in huge, the expense of hosting it there is high from both a promotional standpoint and attendee friendliness point-of-view. While, hosting it on either coast makes it difficult for some population of the collecting community to attend, an east coast show is on the most populated half of the country and gives cheaper access to a much greater number of collectors.

My personal opinion is that central region, a bit further west than Ohio is the best option and I assume that has been considered when granting Chicago 3 of the next 6 years' hosting privledges. However, Chicago is also chosen because it has the big city perks of the LAs and NYCs of the world, with less cost and easier transportation from the airport to the hosting facilities...just a train ride away if I understand correctly.

I think Dallas should also receive the nod. It's a great centralized city with a decent climate for being in the southern half of the US in the summer. I'd like to see Houston on the map as well, but the weather isn't very desirable.

    A '54 and '55 Bowman BOX.

Good lord. That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen.

If I COULD afford that, it would be opened and sorted into numerical order in about 20 minutes, tops.

Well today will be my last day here but it has been a blast. Got a 54 Aaron and 55 Clemente, both are SGC 50 but have great eye appeal. I even passed on a PSA 5 Aaron because this SGC 50 looks better. PSA is covered up. I took some cards in Thursday at 2:00pm and just got them back at 6:00pm Friday. SGC is offering something that I wish PSA would offer called a quick view for $20. You can find a raw card on the floor then take it to SGC and let them view it to determine if it is unaltered and they will give you a grade. PSA should try something like this. OVerall grade show and dealers are very nice and talkative. On a side note Mantles of any grade are like cash in hand.

Got to meet Curt and Lou. Nice guys and Lou has the right name because he is as big as Lou Ferrigno(The Hulk).

  • Got to meet Kirk at the national, real nice guy! the Spence collection is going to be auctioned at some point is what the guy at the table told me.He was letting people get their pics taken holding the 1,000,000 Mantle.I got to hold it and in all seriousness for 3-5 seconds I thought about running out the door with it!But luckily I came to my senses and just handed it back all the while my hands were shaking.1 million dollars in my hand! At the Lelands booth they let me hold and swing 4 different Roberto Clemente game used bats and I could have just fell over dead a happy man. I also attended the net54 dinner Thurs and had a great time and met alot of really great people!

It said that Wagner sold for $950,000 too.

I could only look and drool all over BBCE's booth. Couldn't afford anything there. Was tempted to buy some 1982 Wax, but didn't feel like getting disappointed at my lone OC Ripken.

I also ran into Kirk there, nice guy! Had some sweet looking cards with him!

I was there for most of the day today, so I've decided there's no need to go back tomorrow. I bought pretty much everything I was looking for (that I could find anyway).

I dropped off a CC Special sub at PSA's booth, they are really nice in person too! I wanted to ask if CarolJ was there, but I didn't have the guts to... lol
  • The 51 Bowman. They also had 3 Wagner cards that were said to be woth 950,000, 700,000 & 400,000.the last wagner looked like it had been crumpled like you would a gum wrapper!Unbelievable! Lou.

One of the best things about this show is the incredible material you not only get to see, but hold as well. I'll probably never own a T206 wagner, but I've held 4 of them in my hands in the last 2 days. Not to mention the PSA 10 1951 Bowman Mantle.

Plus you get to meet some pretty cool collectors as well.

Wow. As nice as that is, I didn't think it would be worth $1M. If it ever goes up for auction, it will be interesting to see what it fetches. Spence is known to significantly overpay on his cards, though Mantles tend to appreciate over time.

Where does somebody find a card like that? Was that busted out of a pack in the last 10 years or was it sitting in somebody's attic in pristine condition and they got it graded and sold to Spence? As beautiful as the card is, I find it amazing that a card so old could be in such pristine shape after all these years. I love that.

I don't know about the '51 Bowman, but it's been said a few times that if/when any of the (currently) three PSA 10 '52 Topps Mantles hit the auction block, it'll go for a million $ or more.

May have been from one of those stories where you hear people storing their cards in a hard-back book or something. who knows, lol...

BTW, that 1968 PSA 10 is not as OC as that pic shows. In my opinion it's not OC at all.

regarding the 1951 Bowman Mantle.... I seem to remember an article in SCD in the early 90s talking about that card. What I also remember about the article was that it was in the very early stages of PSA grading.

Yea, I seem to remember that too. Some couple in the South or Midwest owned the card, and had received offers, but were holding out for $100K or so.

I think the article was 50/50 on the card and the new idea of third party grading.

Speaking of the 1951 Bowman Mantle, when I was standing (drooling) at the case today, someone was getting ready to get a photo taken with a card of his choosing (a VIP-only offer I think), and he requested the 1951 Bowman. The guy behind the counted said "you don't want that one, the white border doesn't show up very well in the picture, and you won't be able to see the card, trust me". Made me wonder if that was really the case, or if they were trying to protect the card or something. I guess it could be true, with the two Wagner cards laying next to it. The guy decided on the PSA 9 1952 Topps Mantle... good choice! image

I still think the National would do great in California...put it at the Anaheim Convention Center, we could all go to the Show while everyones families could go to Disneyland. Everyone would be happy! Plus, there is unlimited hotels, great weather, the beach and so many other things for the family while everyone stays busy.

It was just there a couple years ago, and from everything I've heard from so many people that attended and/or set up... widely considered the worst National in the past 10-15 years. I didn't attend, so I can't say from first-hand knowledge, just what I've heard.

I believe the prices of everything (hotel, food, car rental, etc...) were just so high, which is why they believed it was not very successful.
