8:45a.m. 5/14 and the new 09 Lincoln Cent update

The mint store opens at 10 and there are people, in the Mint Store lobby, sitting in lawn chairs, waiting for their 6 rolls.

I have to date NEVER seen this type of hype for any coin before.

UNFREAKING REAL

Probably a byproduct of what happened with the first cents. People smell an oppurtunity to make some money.

How did you get to that link??

Under "Bags and Rolls" all I get is this:

    Lincoln Cent Two-Roll Sets

In 2009, the United States Mint is minting and issuing four new one-cent coins available in two-roll sets in recognition of the bicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth and the 100th anniversary of the first issuance of the Lincoln Cent. The reverse of the Lincoln Cent will reflect four different designs, each one representing a different aspect, or theme, of the life of President Abraham Lincoln. The one-cent coin reverse designs will be issued every three months throughout the year, and are available for a limited time only.

There is a line, you get a number, you wait and baboom, you get the cents.

My number was 37, there were 2 number 37's while I waited.

I have NEVER SEEN this ever for any US coin.

Theres going to be a lot of disappointed people who are buying the pre-sales. I hope the eBay buyers don't plan on having them in hand until at least July

These coins are going to be worth something like 2% more in MS than in XF for the rest of my life. It's the 1950-D nickel all over again, almost non-existent in circulated grades.

Is there another equivalent to this as far as folks just hoarding them at the moment they are released?

This is odd to me at least.

<< <i>Is there another equivalent to this as far as folks just hoarding them at the moment they are released? >>

As far as coins intended to circulate, I don't think so. I think a lot of people will be hoarding anything they find in change with a 2009 date. At least those who are paying attention.

For its time the 1950-D nickel was close but even most of those had to either be immediately plucked from circulation or purchased in BU rolls by people in the know going from bank to bank to find them.

    << <i>Educate me, why the 1950D????? >>

Look at the mintages for the entire Jefferson series. The 1950-D nickel is far lower than the rest of the business strike mintages (I think about 2.5 million). This was known quickly and the hoarding was on.

As a result it's unusual to see a '50-D that isn't uncirculated. These were selling for something like $30 per coin in the 1960s when the roll collecting craze was hot (i.e. $1200 or so for a roll of 40). What a terrible investment that has become...

she was offered $5 a roll as she walked out - she was number 73 in line and reported a couple of hundred behind her, if she sends a pic I'll post it

Go to the catalog page, click on the "product availability" link on the left and then click on "upcoming products".

You could also search the mint site through google for the appropriate key words.

you're right, good question - i don't really know why
maybe people are afraid of missing out on something, the big score
and there are folks out there who really know how to capitalize on that drive

Everyone in line kept chanting historic moment. The guy at the store at 8:45 drove quite a ways to get here.

At this point they have guards directing the line. The young lady behind the counter looks totally overwhelmed.

While I would get a kick outta sitting back and watching the frenzy, in todays society, the person who "dropped" the roll would probably be arrested for inciting a riot...
