Another that I was informed was still alive (thanks Greg). He actually apologized for the delay in replying because he was on a cruise with his wife. Uh, 10 days out and back isn't a delay Mr. Szulborski! Thank you!
Waiting on Mr. Self now and then I'm pretty certain that completes the surviving members of the set...
Maybe . . . Maybe I just found a backdoor to the playground. Maybe it's not really me and my account has been hijacked.
Anyway, it wasn't fun wearing that silly little pointed hat while sitting in the corner. At least I didn't have to write 100 times on the blackboard saying, "I will not write anything remotely close to being considered p*litic@l."

You were right....what can I say. I'd still like to kick the guy in the nuts for being such a tool.
I bought a Brennan and Rossides yesterday - so the only other raw card I need (right now) is Derricotte.
Have you heard from any of the other players? I got in touch with Billy Bye's daughter and asked if Billy would mind signing two cards (one for each of us) for $20 each. I'll let you know how she responds.
I can't remember if I told you, but I heard back from one of Mr. Folsom's children saying that he's unable to sign (due to Alzheimer's). Also, I think that Russ Steger is still alive. I'm still trying to confirm, however I'll let you know what I find out.

I've had 3 returns in the past week. Jack Cloud signed the card as "Flying"...his nickname but not his name. The Dudley had been outstanding since Dec - I'm thrilled to have that one back!

I just heard back from the lady at the Minnesota high school association regarding my request to contact Billy Bye. She informed me that he died yesterday in a boating accident!! How horrible. Attached is a link to the article.
I just found out today that Mike Dimitro has been deceased for approximately 8 years...which leaves only 6 players from the 1948 Leaf set whose fate is uncertain:

Of those 6, I think Roy (aka Rebel) Steiner is still alive. I sent a test letter and will let you know the outcome. Also, I received my card back from Gene Derricotte and it looks amazing!

Nice Derricotte. Did he correct the spelling on the back of your card, too? Funny thing is, he sent my SASE back in his own legal sized envelope (along with the donation) and added some other items. A great guy and from his return address label, a DDS.

Steiner is confirmed to be alive, but I do not have an address for him. If we don't crack anything soon, I may attempt contact via the college alumni associations or through the athletic departments and hope they forward the requests along. Given the advanced age of these gentlemen, it is with great haste that we approach this project. The tragedy to Billy Bye this past Friday only adds more emphasis to the urgency in reaching out. I don't mind losing a few cards or donations. However, the only item I've failed to have returned has been Clarence Self. I'd still love to find out if it went to the right address...
I have a dumb question. With the high numbers of the 48 Leaf cards being so spendy just for the card alone. What does an autographed, Hart, Nomellini, Conerly, or Bednarik 48 Leaf card go for?

Very cool watching this project come along... I had no idea so many of these guys were still with us.
Any idea who will be the tougher ones amongst those who have already passed away?
I rarely see signed 1948 Leaf cards in my daily searches... at least not with "PSA" in the title.
