Once in a while, vending can be a gold mine of great cards (i.e., ...just look at that 1976 vending case rip thread, wow! "a thing of beauty!")..

Every time I "crack" vending, every great looking, centered card, seems to have that "one corner ding", damnit!

Guess you need a big pair of calzones to punk down 10K or so for a 1976 vending case?

But a 1986 vending case?

Pretty damn cheap!

I agree!

My PSA 9 Schmidt below is sooooooooooooooooooooo nice. I honestly think if the PSA grader knew how tough these are, he would have easily gave my Schmidt a 10!

What does the letter "A*" stand for on the Carlton reverse bottom edge? (Located on the bottom edge, left of the "Topps copyright & 1986 date")..

I noticed letters on all 1986s: A*, B*, C*, D*, E* & F*.

Do these "six letters" letters represent what sheet the card originated from? (six different letters, i.e., "six different sheets"???? Anyone?)

That's exactly what it means. matter of fact, you were also able to but vending cases containing cards from certain sheets. Those cases would say "A, C, E" or whatever combinaion was in the case.

That's correct Jay. There were vending cases (which contained all the cards from all sheets), and cut card cases (which were exactly like vending except they case would identify the sheets the cards came from)

both gwynn and boggs are tough to find well-centered. i was watching these 2 and i figured the hammer price would've been higher. i think the buyer got a good price for 2 toughies.

Look for a couple hundred new 86s in my ebay store over the next week or so. I have been busting rack cases left and right. So far the highlight, which will remain in my set, was a Garvey PSA 10, which is a tough low pop. I also added a bunch of new cards to my set. I have a bunch of 9s and 10s that I know you need. I have two #700 Reggie Jackson PSA 10s that will be for sale. 86 is a great set, but man is it tough. I refuse to buy a the #1 Pete Rose or the #100 Nolan Ryan in PSA 10. I now have three more of each in PSA 9. One day I'll find some magic.

No, I sold off my '86s! I still have a bunch of minty fresh raw '86 material, some gem worthy. (Thanks stingray for the heads-up!)

Guess I'll sub them in a few years from now, when prices come back a little.

Just opened a couple of rack boxes. 86s are tough - but that's what makes it fun. I pulled about 50 card that appear worthy of grading, and will probably send 15 -20. I'll let you guys know how I do. I see some of you are doing the set in PSA 10 - that's quite adventurous! If I get more energy I will scan some of the better ones I opened...
