  • Great thread. 1986 Topps is tough. Pulled some nice cards from a rack case recently.

I am looking for a Ryne Sandberg is PSA 9 if anyone has a spare.
  • Hey there...I have a PSA 9 Sandberg that I'd be willing to part with. Shoot me a PM if you like.
  • GB...PM'd you back.

1986 Topps is a great card. Here is a question: What is the toughest card to get a high grade on? From busting lots of racks, wax, etc, I would put the Bo Diaz as one of the worst cut cards ever!

  • Hey there...I have not tried really looking at all of the 86's that I have. The 9 I have is actually from my childhood collection...I didn't realize it was such a tough card at the time. I was just pulling out some HOFers I thought would grade well...

They must stalk these boards. Congrats on your pickup.

Busted a rack box of these last night. Man are these cards tough to find centered. I have a small stack of cards that are centered well and filled a 800 ct box with off center stuff. Got 2 nice Ripkens but most off the HOF/star cards were off center. Also the extra all star cards that come in the racks were all off center save one. I always liked those cards as a kid.
  • I have seen requests come up on these boards for obscure commons, and not a month later 4 Sharp will put it up on ebay. This leads me to speculate they check these boards once in awhile to get an idea of what people are looking for. I know it's happened to me before! Soooo... if *anyone* knows where I can get Armas #255, Barrett #734, Boyd #605 (someone beat me to the $35 one posted last month), Crawford #91, Gutierrez #633, Hoffman #38, Hurst #581, Kison #117, Lyons #233, McNamara #771, Miller #424, Sax #307... or even a Hawk Dawson in PSA 10... it would make my day image

I opened a 86 waxbox today. I have several others and honestly I think I will leave them unopened. If I were to bust any more packs of these I think the rack packs look much better. I also think I want to get some more experience under my belt before getting into these.

How good does the black part of these have to be to get a 9 or 10?
  • ldfergldferg Posts: 6,740 ✭✭✭
They are tough. In general, there should be no white or chipping. However, there are always an exception or two that passes by.

LMK if you can help me find these all-star cards in PSA 9 or 10:

    1. Gary Carter
    2. Pedro Guerrero
    3. Dave Winfield

    Thanks...

So many issues with the 1986 Topps cards.

Centering: A challenge not only left and right but also top to bottom.

Black Border: Chipping, no doubt. Also, the black can appear faded or mushy.

Surface: Plenty of issues with snow (George Bell) and fisheyes, red ink defects "splattered" over the surface. Not to mention blurry images and team names with out of focus printing.

If the set had 2-3 major HOF rookies in it, the set would get more attention. Still fun to rip open boxes of the stuff. Land a low pop beauty or HOF star in a 10 holder and you can really cash in.

Hey guys just put up some high grade low pop commons for anyone that may be working on a set....

    86 PSA 9's and 10's
  • RynoandBoRynoandBo Posts: 393 ✭✭
I subbed a dozen or so 86's and did not get one 10. Plenty of 10's in every other year and make, but 86 Topps got the hammer.

I am going to crack and resub a couple that I just cannot see where the card deserved an 8.

    Andre Dawson 8
    Bo Diaz 8
    Ryne Sandberg 3 8's
    Tom Waddell 8
    Nolan Ryan 9
    John Russell 9
    Ripken 9
    Ozzie Guillen 9

The Sandberg is a crazy card to get in high grade. I have busted mindless numbers of 86 to get a 10. I have subbed close to a dozen, maxing out at an 8. I just had to sub this beauty for fun, enjoy.....this is how many look fresh from wax, and there's no qualifiers!!!!:

Back featuring a nice gum stain:

On a very happy note, I did land this card in a 10 via a trade. It's a pop 1 and is my favorite card in the collection:

I'm guessing PSA is REALLY REALLY tough on the 86 Ryan huh?
  • RynoandBoRynoandBo Posts: 393 ✭✭
I would say yes....assuming you are talking about Nolan Ryan. There are a decent amount of 10's out there, not hundreds mind you, but enough to command a $250 price tag on ebay.

As for Ryno, he and 86 Topps do not get along very well. I am unfamiliar with the printing process, but why does his card so frequently have red blotches and print defects?
  • JJacksJJacks Posts: 759

I agree with some of the other posters here that the 1986 Topps set is pretty cool, and likely to be one that is considered "tough" for the highest grades in the future. It's by no means rare, or even scarce, or even remotely tough to find, but there are alot of cards that have flaws in that set - many from printing, etc. but it was also a set that was heavily collected by kids at the time, etc. and 1986 was alot different from 1989 for example where even kids were buying cards and immediately putting them into sleeves, etc.

I saw this thread yesterday and thought I would rip a wax box to see if I could find anything to give away here. In general when I rip boxes like this one, I only look at cards I would want in a 10, but I looked at every single card this time. 36 packs and there was nothing even close to a 10. I was pretty surprised and didn't totally understand why this would be such a tough set. I still like ripping those boxes, so I'll keep an eye out, but good luck to all of you giving this a go.

Time to resurrect the love for the 86 set. I'm ripping a rack box tonight while my wife and daughter are out shopping.

I've been buying 1986 Topps rak-paks at an astronomical rate as of late. I must have close to 4 cases of this stuff. Haven't ripped a single pack as of yet. I will sometime in the near future hit this set with hurricane force winds!

    Later, Paul.

I opened about 1/3 of the box last night and will finish this am. This looks like one of the best boxes I've ripped conditionwise. Hoping for that GEM Ryno.

really? +2k? Good for the seller. I will say it's a difficult card to obtain in MINT, let alone GEM. I've ripped several 86 racks trying to hit this one, but I don't recall ever having anything above an 8.

I have a VERY nice raw set. I split a vending case with a friend in 1986, and put the best set in a binder. I still have all the cards. I do not see any point in having any of them graded. I will, though, go back and look at my Sandberg.
  • RynoandBoRynoandBo Posts: 393 ✭✭
I did see that stain on the back of the $2,400 PSA 10. Wonder who bought it. If anybody wants my 10, I will cut you a deal at $2,250.

I also have for sale or trade:

    #88 Tom Waddell PSA 8
    #254 Ozzie Guillen PSA 9
    #392 John Russell PSA 9
    #690 Ryne Sandberg PSA 8

    #706 Pedro Guerrero

PM me if you have or know where I can find these...Thx

EDITED TO ADD: Thx GB5HOF for this one -- I'd like to upgrade it to a 9 or 10 but this is the perfect place holder...

Look at this piece of garbage that get placed in a PSA 9 Mint holder:

    PSA 9 1986 Topps Dawson

    Centering: Bad L/R
Corners: Both left side are aweful
Edge: Left side in the black is aweful

My 8 looks MUCH better. I would be embarrassed to list this card and embarrassed to allow it in the case by P S A. Please don't give me the old, "Graders are human and sometimes this happens".
  • GB5HOFGB5HOF Posts: 590
Honestly, that's ridiculous. I wouldn't even submit that card. Ever.

I have a Dawson Basic Topps set and I would like a 9 or 10 in this card....that one is just aweful.
  • I hear you on the Dawson. I've had trouble there as well and the best I've uncovered is an 8. Putting together Basic Topps and 86 HOF set, so I could use a nice one.

Hey fellas...going to be putting some relatively tough 86 graded commons over on the BST side later today. Some nice PSA 8 "placeholders" and some 9's that people may need for their sets. Please let me know if the prices are out of whack in any way. There is some lower pop stuff on here so I'm not totally sure on pricing.

Hi guys, these 86s are tough for sure. I'm trying to get a Ray Miller #381 in PSA 9 ot greater. I've tried submitting and am getting tired of 8s.

    Hey guys,

I landed a 1986 Topps PSA 9 Mint Bo Diaz in my latest sub. This card is pure insanity as the cuts are just all over the place. POP 1 in a 9 with no 10's.

Also landed a Sandberg Tiffany in a 10 for the PC.

Adam, I will check my supply of Ray Miller. Anybody else get cards back from PSA with 1986 Topps?
  • ldfergldferg Posts: 6,740 ✭✭✭
I landed a 10 in Brett and Ripken with 9s of Ryno, Ripken, and a coupe of others. I hit a decent rack box. More at PSA now, but no Ryan's or other Rynos above an 8.
