This pedigreed coin just sold @ Heritage for a paltry 2 grand ..........
A 51-D that sits in a PCGS 66 FBL holder and looks as colorful as this comes around once every decade or so -
I know , I never saw one in twenty years of searching .
So with a history of the date selling for as much as twice what this one brought ,
why didn't this bring over 5 grand in a furious bidding battle ?
It is soooo rare with color like this in this grade , I can only guess even serious Franklin people have lost complete interest in the series

<< <i>Looks like it has been covered in infant feces... yuck.... Cheers, RickO >>
I would have just said it was a bad picture. Do I get to compare white coins with Michael Jackson, now?

<< <i>Unfortunately , this example -as so many other colorful PCGS Franklin's; has been "worked" by Steve Leber- affectionately known as " THE BEEF "
he would take a toothpick and a mild acidic solution and would create "spots" in strategic locations to misdirect attention from bag marks and
problems..........
Using this method , he got a lot of Franklin's to upgrade -but he seemed to really focus on the 51-D's.
I doubt a handful of people know of his "trick" ,but it's easy to spot . >>
I think you might have answered your own question.
That's why I like to have someone like Feld view coins for me if I can't attend the auction.
I can recall in the old days, asking Beef "How much?"
"I'm not done with that one yet," was a common reply!
and they're cold.

"I think you might have answered your own question. "
i thought that as i was writing .....
<< <i>is the area above the left side of U of TRUST what you are talking about? >>
that and the bridge of his nose , to the right of Y in Liberty , and that snake like vertical line that bisects his shoulder
oh hell yes -great example of color pushing the grade up .
Nobody bid from the floor on this lot .......so I figure it's not a true 66 ;
if it was ,(as I said - it's rare as the dickens with color and even idiots know that)
, it would have brought alot more $$
"Because I can"
myurl The Franklin All Old Green Holder Set
pay for it is $10.
i would have never guessed.
otherwise... a coin over graded and doctors known to play tricks to
get higher grades? i am shocked. not. par for the course in this hobby as people try to find the greater fool.
It holds up to scrutinizing under a 10x glass and halogen lighting .
I can only assume there were no Franklin specialists @ the auction and that Mr. Tomaska was tapped out after buying that complete PCGS set;
as this coin would have no trouble showing up in his newsletter @ $ 5800.00 !
It is the most exciting toned semi-key Franklin I have seen in years and how very lucky I have been
just to see it !

Very interesting. Is this also what caused (what look to my eye like) milkspots on the reverse?

MIKE-
I think yes; he put a few stains on the rev. so as to throw off suspicion .
<< <i>As has been said a meelion times: "You can not grade a coin from a picture!" >>
that's right Grasshopper - you can not grade from a pix ; but you should be able to get an idea of how the coin might look in hand .
In this instance , the Heritage pix resembles the coins features- but don't come close to showing what it really looks like .
<< <i>It's almost impossible to see what the coin looks like from the picture above. But I see some nice colors hiding in the pic! >>
p.c;
i looked at it under halogen , sunlight, incandescent, fluorescent , etc -
you would love the colors
Thanks for posting this and opening a few eyes.
did nobody see this coin @ the auction ?

<< <i>I say NT, but photo is juiced. I've seen enough neon green to know when it looks a bit too radioactive. >>
AYE MATEY ............. I bought it from Pat B. @ 1500$ ,
the pix was his and I think he juices a tad wee bit on his photo's

that is the only pix i got .......... the colors are saturated , but are true to life
it is impossible with the camera I have to get a true representation.
and you can bet for me to lay out 1500 clams for it ( non fbl ) ; it's a stunning mind blower
did that feller say the green looked neon and juiced ?
well here -I got rid of the green !

I'd say it would have to be for that kinda money. How's the reverse look? Toned? White?

you see this kinda tone on a late date D mint once in a blue moon

<< <i>Looks like that might be a sweet 49-D, Devious! (But not the greatest pic) >>
Still working out the coin photo skills. Laugh.
<< <i>Looks like a piece of crap to me. Most I'd
pay for it is $10.
if you can dish it out , you got to man up and take it back ..........
