2008-W ASE - Anything special in these?

I just got a few of these from the US Mint, I purchased them to keep for my son but I was wondering if these will be a good long term investment.

Well, I look at it this way:

Silver is a safer investment than most stocks or mutual funds in today's market. The ASE's are beautiful coins, and a lot more fun than the stock market. Finally, they tend to gain value over time and can be worth a LOT more money if they are MS70 graded or in the case of the 2008 W, if they have the '07 reverse! If you get a few of those, they are worth North of $500 USD.

I didn't own a single ASE before Dec 31st 2008. My wife had mentioned that she loved the design and thought they were the prettiest coin she had seen, so I bought her one for New Years Eve. I now own about 12 of them! Haha.

They should be just marginally ok for L.T. investment, as long as they don't start getting milk spots.

From a bullion perspective, silver wil have to go up quite a bit to recoup your costs from the US Mint so the only real hope is that the mintage stays low AND everybody and his brother have not stuck these away as an investment.

From a graded perspective, the MS70 2008-W coins from PCGS have just not performed as well as other MS70's in the past. Heck the regular old 2008 SAE in MS70 draws more dollars.

A really nice coin, silver can appreciate in value - not likely more than you paid at Mint prices though. Cheers, RickO

Mintages!

2006-W 468,553 ( Key )

2007-W 690,891

2008-W 493,658 so far!
however possibly 47,000 have reverse of 07 Error. ( 493,658 minus 47,000 errors = 446,658 non errors ) this could make 2008-W the new key depending on how you look at it.
also 2008-w eagles are sold out, but the 2008 dollar set is still for sale & it has a 2008-W eagle in the set. so 2008-w numbers are still going up!

Have any 2008 w with the '07 reverse been found in the 2008 dollar sets?

None that have been reported here! I expect that if some had been found in the Dollar Sets that one of the major publications would have picked up on it though.

Always hard to say what it might do long term. There's a couple of factors in it. #1. There's already a ton of them out there. #2. There's a ton of collectors out there for them. Question is, how well does the demand stack against the supply and how will that change in the future? The only Mint State silver eagle that's a better date as a raw coin is the 1996 and the 2006-W Burnished.

Oh, and did you check to make sure they aren't Reverse of 2007s?
