1909-S and 1909 VDB UNC UNSEARCHED SHOTGUN WHEAT ROLL
At least the seller does not not say that they could be 1909-S VDBs. I wonder how he knows they arent
The implied here is that this is an old past dealer's roll of 1909-S VDB. IF I had obtained these and IF this story was true, That roll would have been opened first thing.
It will be interesting to see where it ends, it only takes two people to think they have figured out the unsaid rarity and bid strong.

<< <i>Holy hell! The 1909 S in the roll looks like the SAME ONE he bought in the auction linked above!!! Look at the green spot below the "E" in "Liberty"!! What a scumbag!
-Paul >>
Yes, quite interesting. If he was smarter he would have at least bought under a different account.
<< <i>The oldest trick in the book! I hate it!! Like they are unsearched, What a joke! I guess everybody's stupid! >>
Yes, but not everybody has to be stupid. He only needs two or three stupid ones.

The seller is relying on the PB Barnum statement, "There is one born every minute."
<< <i>I got a hold of this roll through a widow of a coin dealer that was put away in a safe deposit box for years. >>
HAHAHAHAHA!!
minutes later i get an email saying that he made a mistake, that the $9.99 was supposed to be the starting bid
and not a BIN, so i did not reply. two minutes later i recieve a phone call from the seller, i did not answer.
then he calls again so i answer and explains himself pleading with me he made a mistake.i thought to myself
this guy just got my phone number if i say no what will he do next.so i cancelled the deal,in return he sent me
a '55 unc rosie some indian cents and some wheaties. did i do the right thing?
<< <i>The implied here is that this is an old past dealer's roll of 1909-S VDB. >>
But of course. Don't all dealers store their key date coins in paper rolls?

NO,
I would have answered in a gruff Italian accent asking when he was going to send your Godfather's roll out.
What shocks me is that this type of fraudulent auction is nearly always accompanied by a photo showing one end of the roll that has clearly been opened and then (badly) re-rolled closed.
The stupid, gullible bidders are blameworthy; but the seller should be jailed.

He sure is making some big money on these auctions. A little seed money, a little story, equals large returns.

<< <i>I reported him, stating that the seller was misleading buyers by manfacturing "Unsearched" rolls, and planting key dates on the ends to lure buyers to pay outrageous amounts. I will let you know if they reply... >>

The sad thing is, that he isn't really breaking any EBAY rules. And even if Ebay decides that he IS being fraudulent, the worst he gets is a warning!

It appears that there is little anyone can do - aside from collect the evidence such as we have done, BUY a roll from the jerk, and then file charges. Then you go to court, spend more money on attourney fees, court costs, and IF you get a judgement, maybe you get your money back? Even criminal charges would most likely result with a "slap on the wrist".
I can't believe people actually get away with scams like this...

If you were to buy the roll and pay with Paypal though, whats to keep you from returning it and getting your money back if you see you've been scammed?
Isn't this what Ebay and Paypal are trying to do in making the buyer less afraid to buy with their new policies?
I have several lots of coins I'd like to list on Ebay, but I have a fear someone will buy them, cherrypick the better coins out and replace them with crap, then return them to me and get their money back from Paypal.
From a sellers standpoint, it's real dangerous.
Am I wrong?

I basically agree. With both PayPal and CC chargebacks, there is plenty of buyer protection available these days. It comes down to buyers' greed - getting something for nothing - balanced against "caveat emptor".
