Darktone, the kind of toning on Ken's dime is typical of silver coinage that was stored in paper rolls for a significant length of time. I have opended a number of WLH, Merc, Roos and WQ rolls that had every coin match that look to some extent.

This thing was a bear to get a photo of. Actually the darker color toward the center is so white it turned out dark. The color toward the edge is very light and is the blue and chalk color you see on original Mercs that have not been messed with. No PVC that I could see. The coin is in a PCGS MS67 slab.

Originality can mean many things to many people and can be highly influenced by the collecting bias that one has developed over time. I prefer to think of originality in the sense that the coinage surface has never been intentionally manipulated after release from the Mint outside of being used in normal, day-to-day commerce and then saved or, in the case of coinage immediately put aside by collectors, the coinage is simply saved.

I try to pick coins for my collection that are original as per my understanding of my own definition. Billet7 appears to like early halves, so here is a cool overdate that is crusty and original as can be-

Neat looking coins. I like the mint set toning coins still in the mint set cardboard holders.

Here is an AU 1847 dollar. The centers are a deep reddish brown and not as dark as in my pictures. Still, I am sure it has never been cleaned.

I thank everyone for posting...keep posting, don't let me stop you. I just wanted to say that there are some great coins on here. I know I didn't specify as to what an "original" coin is...I thought you could decide what your most "original' coin is...and I whole heartedly agree (well...on most of them.) I especially like the "crusty" coins.
