What would you do...PCGS guarantee downgrade?

Well folks, I had a 2006-W $1 PCGS PR70, but it started developing the dreaded milkspots after about 6 months in the holder. So I dropped it off at the PCGS booth at FUN for a guarantee review. As expected PCGS has come back with a downgrade to PR69 (which still seems odd given the amount of spotting). My first question is whether or not their offer of $150 is fair for a 2006-W Proof $1 in PR70. The second question is whether or not it's worth it to get the coin back and take less money?

So as the title suggests....what would you do:

In reference to submission #394XXX1, unfortunately your coin, a 2006-W $1, did downgrade. We can offer to buy back the coin for $150 or return it to you in a PR69DC holder plus $130. Please let me know what you would like us to do.

  • I'd take all cash rather than less cash + a spotted coin...

A 70 is only $20 more than a 69 plus a spotted 69, can't wait for the modern mint buyers to chime in.

Take the money... you obviously will never be happy with a spotted coin. Cheers, RickO

I guess the coin could be considered a dog now image
  • I keep reading about spotting in PCGS holders, but not about spotting in holders of other companies. Makes me wonder. I have some ASE's inall kinds of holders, PCGS included, but no spots. What am I doing wrong? image

    $150 seems fair:

I'd take the $130 and the coin. $20 is only about $5 more than the price of a common unc. silver eagle. It's still a proof, and in the next few years the bullion value alone will probably exceed $20.

full refund- then buy a 69 dcam. 99% of the time you can tell the difference between a 69 and 70 so take the 70 money buy a 69 and with the other $120 or so buy 10 ASE in unc not graded. its a great investment and you still have a beautiful dcam ASE
may the fonz be with you...always...

At least PCGS backs up their grades!!

Take the cash + the coin. You can't buy a 69 DCAM for $20 anywhere, even a spotted one.

I would just counteroffer $150 + the coin. They've already committed to paying at least that much cash out of their hands... What are they going to do with the coin anyways??? Otherwise, can you get just the coin back in the 70 holder??? Not sure what your other options are if you're unhappy with either offer...

I would take the $150, and buy a clean, PR69.

Very sound advice, I would do this.
  • Thanks for the opinion guys.

I like the one suggestion to ask for $150 plus my coin back. It's not like they can do anything with the coin.
