Based on the pic, it looks OK, but I am not entirely sure.

I would not buy it just for the fact that the photo was taken on a berber carpet.

If you see glints of luster on the reverse, instead of a dull washed out look, you have a nice coin (I can't tell from the image). Color on the obverse looks okay. If the reverse doesn't looked washed-out and the coin is slabbed, consider buying it. Most BN Uncs. you see in this series are ugly 1855s missing half the dentils with no detail in half of the stars. If it's not slabbed, there's a good reason for it. PC coins in this series carry a 20-30% premium over NGC coins.

Color looks fine to me. However, on the reverse, it looks like someone picked off a small bit of corrosion (?spot of verdigris) above the HA of "half" leaving a pit behind and what looks like the remnants of a little rub, maybe from a q-tip.

I think it was taken on a knit blanket...and the color looks OK to me.

Color looks Ok to me. The only thing I'm a little suspicious of, and maybe it's just an illusion, is what appears to be a couple of lumps beneath the ear/along the jaw line. That would be pretty unusual I think for a genuine US issue. There are known struck counterfeits in this and the large cent series (Bay Area counterfeits being the most famous), though I don't know of any for this date, and the chance of it being fake is probably pretty small. Just an FYI.

I see no reason to call it market unacceptable, if that's what you're asking.

I'd like to examine it in-hand, as some of the color left on the rims bothers me (i'd expect a brown coin to be really brown in these areas), but my overall feel is the coin looks good to me.

p.s. Walkerguy, it's a half cent, and the raised spots are very typical on half cents and large cents of this period -- they are compass marks used to center the stars visible on all 1851's. Here's a better shot of one:

PPS - I know it's a half cent, Mike, I also know Bay Area counterfeits were produced for half cents as well as large cents. That's why I said "and the large cent series". I have a picture of an 1835 B.A.C. half cent, and the reference indicates other dates exist

Admittedly, that pic from Heritage has the same attributes as the OP's coin, so I'm sure it's Ok.

That looks like a very decent example based on pictures. Challenging to find these unmolested.One of the most common dates you see available for the braided series and often available with a sprinkling of red. That said, it looks like a nice example.
