arrow & rays quarter, I give up...
Without a zoon lens I can't get myself and the camera far enough away to capture the light and thus the true color. At least I think I did a decent job on the detail though. What do you think (about the coin)?

It's also a somewhat earlier die state as the only crack I see is at the base of TES in STATES.
It's fairly well struck as most of the centrils in the stars are showing.
It's at least AU condition. I can't tell if it's mint state from the picture.
The heavy hit in the right obverse field is the only real drawback.
All in all, a nice coin.
Just my opinion.

Congrats !!!
If I had to swag a guess, I'd say MS62 or MS63. The coloration on the rev sort of implies a not messed with coin which is unusual for a mint state 1853 considering 90% or more have been screwed with.

<< <i>The photo comes out quite dark on my computer but I can tell that the high points look full and rounded......so MS imo.

The extent of my criteria for seated coinage for my AU/MS type set is that it is not blast white or hairlined to death. Who would have thought I was setting my sights so high. As I alluded to in my OP, the coin is a bit more colorful (and brighter) than my pic leads on, which had me suspecting dip/retone. I showed it to a couple of people at a local show today, and all said there was no reason to believe that was the case and that the coin looked original.
NCG graded it as a 58.

<< <i>Nice coin, does it resemble this one?

Nice try. That is closer, but the problem with my original image is I couldn't get the lighting right to pick up a much ligher color along the date.

Fresh strike, probably pretty attractive color, looks mostly ("fully"?) original
I'm thinking AU58, with the only real distraction as the right obverse field hit.
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”
