Exhume the pack and RIP!! image
  • Very generous of them to offer returns and stuff . I didnt get on this rip (being layed off will do that) but i did have a slight problem
with an order i placed with them awhile back . Instead of shipping the box back to them , they told me to keep it and they would
send the correct box right out to me . As long as i rip older packs , they will have my business and i will always recommend them
    to others.

Im a very focused collector of cards from 1909 - 2012...LOL
  • I'm ripping my packs when they arrive. I'll even try chewing the gum. I'll write my will out before hand and leave my cards to the good guys on the boards. I'll probably get the runs or bad stomach cramps by chewing the gum, but hey, we only live once...

My PO Box was empty!!!!!!!! ARGH!!!!!!!! Please be there tomorrow!

I will probably rip one and hold the other until a rainy day when I get that unstoppable urge. Then again, I could rip both and buy something else for a rainy day.......

  • I assume they were sent UPS as always. If so, I will have mine at 10AM tomorrow. Another thing I like about BBCE. Orders arrive by UPS at about 10AM on the 4th day.

Ripped the graded pack. The gum claimed two cards, pulled a nice but OC Clemente In Action. I'll scan tomorrow with (hopefully) a pack from the group rip.
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,951 ✭✭✭✭
Mine was USPS. I thought they sent all smaller orders USPS, and the larger ones UPS. I could be wrong.

    Here are my scans:

These are getting submitted this month. I scanned the front and back of the RC because I wanted to show you the centering. I'm loving this card. The other three are obviously WAY OC, but there is only one of each of these cards ever subbed, so I figured they would make decent set fillers for the registry guys.

These are the cards that had the gum stains... OUCH!

    These are the OC rejects.

I had a wierd sence of actually smelling the gum when I saw those cards
I collect Seattle Pilots autographs, 1969 Topps autographs, Signed Mickey Mantle Home Run History cards and have a JC Martin collection (he was my college Baseball coach)

  • The back of that Baylor is crisp and the centering looks dead on. L/R front may be the only thing keeping that one from a 10 but you never know.

Edit to add: Has anyone even checked the pop report on this set? Only 28 total PSA 10's out of 4025 total cards subbed.
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,951 ✭✭✭✭
Here's a better scan of the front:

That Baylor is beautiful! It's not a rookie but it's a nice card. The big 72 OPC collector, Frank Bakka, already has a 9 (1 of 6) but it's a 9 all day. I'm not sure I would send in the off-center ones. There really aren't many people chasing the set, and they just don't sell for much at all with the OC qualifier. Just my opinion, but I would wait and see if anybody else gets the same cards in gradeable condition, then maybe give it more thought.

I missed the rip, wish I had seen it!

My packs showed up today, and as much as I love opening 1972 OPC series 2, I will be taking BBCE up on their offer to return them for store credit. I'll spend some time over the weekend checking their site to see what I will exchange them for.

The group rip organizer himself is sending his packs back?? Boo-hiss!!! image

Instead of sending the packs back, why not offer them up to the others that were wanting in but got shut out??
  • Don't be too hard on Nick, he simply collects commissions on all the sales he generates for bbce. J/K image

Did you read the whole thread as to why they are going back? They cant be ripped, and my packs wouldn't grade very well at all, so why would I do that to another member?
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,951 ✭✭✭✭
On that Baylor/Oates card, I just noticed how off-center the Harrison photo is on the card. There's a gap on the left side of his photo, and the right side is overlapping Oates' photo! They must not have had Photoshop back in the early '70s... lol
  • fattymacsfattymacs Posts: 2,581 ✭✭✭
Well, I ripped both packs (in addition to the graded pack I ripped last night) scans shall follow (after my early afternoon meeting).

No cards as of 10:30 this morning. image

One package as of 11:45. image Yes I check several times until the Post Office closes.

I will be doing the rip tonight and scanning at the same time. Hope everyone can watch me pull (as I said earlier) that PSA 10 Clemente!

  • I forgot about mine! They were sitting outside my front door.
  • PROMETHIUS88PROMETHIUS88 Posts: 2,962 ✭✭✭✭✭
Nick, I had read the previous posts and I can understand why you weren't wanting to open, but as several members were taking the risk and ripping theirs, I just thought there may have been others that were willing to take the chance as well.
    No harm no foul!
  • My packs look clean. Now what do I do with them? I looked at the front and back card just to get a glimpse of the centering. The pack on the right appears to be well centered. The front and back card appear to be in the 60/40 or better range.

WOW!!! Nice 1st Clemente!!! You had a couple more stained cards than I did. Nice rip!
  • jimq112jimq112 Posts: 3,511 ✭✭✭
If McRae IA is as hard with OPC as it is with Topps that's also a great card. The Clemente is beautiful!
    image
  • I don't know why OPC didn't have the cards packed so the gum surface was on the back of the card? That gum does look nasty.
  • fattymacsfattymacs Posts: 2,581 ✭✭✭
    the gum smells funky too.
  • milbrocomilbroco Posts: 2,774 ✭✭✭✭
OK Here is my first pack. imageimage

Well I said earlier I was going to hit the PSA 10 Clemente, I guess I was half right.

Ripping the second pack will depend on the first five responses to rip or to not after this post.

Cards have crazy amount of staining.
  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,877 ✭✭✭✭✭
This box must have been improperly stored near heat at some point in time...unfortunately, odds are every pack will be afflicted with this issue...I think the last 72 OPC box had the same issue if memory serves..

Ouch, but it could have been worse. Still a nice card.

  • milbrocomilbroco Posts: 2,774 ✭✭✭✭
Stain on the Splittorf and the checklist bottom right, and nuturally the 1st card with the gum practically attached and was not scanned.

  • I opened both of mine. I chewed the gum and just woke up from passing out from the gross taste of the gum. Maybe that explains the major gas I had all night (just joking on the gum chewing). Pretty much all of my cards were stained in both packs. Definite water damage to the packs or moisture got to them. I'll stick to newer packs in the future. My first and last "vintage" style rip.

I haven't got my packs yet, but I assume they'll be here in Tuesday's or Wednesday's mail run. If anyone that got shut out, wants to buy my packs for the same price I paid $75.00 delivered, I would be willing to sale them to you. HOWEVER, PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT MORE THAN LIKELY, THE CARDS WILL HAVE DAMAGE SIMILAR TO THE ONES DISPLAYED IN THE SCANS. If you don't mind that, you can buy my packs, otherwise I'll probably send them back for store credit myself.

Three hall of famers in one pack for Milbroco (unfortunately with gum and centering issues). That's why I like 1972 OPC series 2 (when the packs are cleaner).
