Chopmarked 8 Reales.....

so i'm thinking i'd like to add a nice chopmarked example to my modest counterstamped collection.......i ran across this trainwreck of a coin on Ebay.....can anyone post a pic of a coin with more chopmarks on it?? this has got to be a record!

p.s. i ruled this one out.......you guessed it, seller is in China (which i must admit kinda makes sense for this coin when you think about it but i'm not taking any chances)

Most chop marked coin ever!?

    >>We only selling the GENUINE coins!>>

i'm convinced, back to bidding.....kidding but in actuality this seller has 100% feedback so this may be the rare exception to the rule

It looks like an image of the lunar landscape that NASA used to plan moon landings. By the way, I have an authentic US Trade dollar with something like 31-chopmarks.

Resembles a buffalo chip from where I'm sitting.
  • He/she sold another similar one earlier for about $32, I personally wouldn't risk much more than that on something like this.

Kind of neat, though. I figure a few more stamps and it'll start to break apart.image

As you know, they were minted for trade with Asia. Chinese merchants or bankers would weigh them, verify they were real silver, and mark them with their symbol (chopmark) which also made it possible to verify it wasn't made of plated base metal. If the coin came around to them again, they would see their own chop and not have to re-verify that it was good silver.

Here is a chopmarked 8 Reales with a heavy die break, neat coin:

  • Interesting coin, with a few Chinese characters. From what I've read, the rest were applied in India, and these are scarcer, because coins sent there were often melted, including Seated Liberty (non-Trade) US Dollars that the Chinese rejected as "lightweight."

I recently found a 1769 REALE in Hong Kong it is so chopped it is barely recognizable. (Typo fixed)

A 10-year old thread revived! @RobertM, looks like the coin you posted is actually a 1769; it's a Pillar 8R, not a bust. These Carlos III 8 Reales can actually be found in pretty nice states of preservation with chops. Still very cool to find chopmarked coins in Hong Kong, wish I could make that trip!

I know it's not an 8 Reales, but is this chopmarked enough for you?

@RobertM....Welcome aboard...That is certainly the most chopmarked coin I have seen...many seem to be chopped over other chops...Cheers, RickO

  • Thanks RickO. Blew my mind.
