The coin looks fine, but I don't like the new NGC holders.

    Lee,

Are my eyes getting worse or are your images looking softer?
It's really evident in the image of the holder.

Nice coin, but the plastic tabs are a major distraction for me….but, I’m easily distracted.

Thanks for the compliments on the coin. I don't like the holder either. I guess I'm in the "Buy the coin and not the holder" group. image

It is nice but I hope you didn't pay a premium for it as I have found the dark toned 21 peace $'s go for much less, stickered or not. They rarely tone pretty and due to that they are one of the few coins that don't get that "original skin" bounce of 20% of other early silver get. But I feel every collector should have a nice 21 Peace since it is such a great American coin

Definitely a solid 64. It has the quintessential peace dollar satin like "anti-luster" going on, and I am a big fan of that. Strike seems about average, which is good since poor struck 21's abound, and I for one really like the original skin look on any silver dollar. The toning in the legend on the reverse is a bit distracting, but I am sure the picture exaggerates it. The rim toning on the front has the affect of making her face seem almost backlit, and i like it quite a bit.

I like the coin, but would have to crack it and dip it... looks like it spent too long in the baby's diaper. Cheers, RickO

Put me also in the 'nice originality' camp.

Images are what fuels the Boards, but I think in our justified excitement to see images, we often ignore the fact that the coins really have a lot more pop in hand than we (well, except for Mark and a couiple others) can see on our monitors. In the case of this coin, I think the originality would be superb and really carry the coin in the eyes of a collector. Perhaps the toning isn't for everyone, but I look at this and see the same type of toning I've witnessed on many Peace specimens. With this being a nice date and condition, I think it has the whole package.

    Nice piece . . . . .

Very crusty and original, Lee. I like it -- thanks for posting it!

I am a little surprised it is in a new NGC holder. I've submitted a number of Peace dollars to NGC recently and they've been bodybagged for 'staining,' which I inferred refers to spots like the one on your coin under 'TRVST.' This was new to me -- I've had plenty of coins slab with those spots before, and I've seen plenty of spectacular examples on this board -- and I fear that this trend will lead to a new wave of unnecessary 'conservation.' Perhaps that's the idea.

Here is my '21 Peace (NGC MS63)....

Love the OP's Peace Dollar, don't care much for the new holder.
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

Roger, I recognize this coin from the new Peace Dollar book. Is it considered a first strike or a Proof? It is, I think, the only one I have seen with full rounded date as well as full hair detail.

    Rick,
You’re right, I used the photos for the 1921 subsection in the Peace dollar book. It appears to be an early strike from new dies and was likely part of the 100,000 made on December 28, 1921. (It is, however, not as early as the deFrancisci sample pieces in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.)

The strike is nice and nearly full (compared to the bronze cast and sandblast proofs) although I’d liked to have seen the thin horizontal hair strand (just right of the eye) better defined and the hair mass over the ear more fully rounded. The reverse has good overall definition with rounded lettering and clean feather detail.

I grade it AU and will leave the points to those who handicap such things.
