Regarding the last piece, I'm trying to establish that this is the piece once in Maurice Gould's collection of counterstamps. He was a pioneer in researching c/s pieces when few cared

from Gould:

Also, Ebay smiled on me this week as I have this on it's way from Australia (seller's pics)

Very interesting... I have always been interested in counterstamped coins... they carry an air of personal history. Cheers, RickO

Dude, you'd better watch it, 'cause you're slippin' into "you suck" territory with some of this stuff.

That '74 Seated half is a jawdropper, and since it also happens to be a very tidy "PQ" holey, if you ever wanted to be rid of it you know who to ask- I'd buy that one from you any day.

The Queen Anne piece is very, very appealing to me. I have a thing for Anne's coins anyway. Looks like somebody died on December 8, 1816, at age 21. Interesting that the coin was already over a century old when it got engraved. (Anne ruled from 1702 to 1714, Litesiders). Is it a shilling or halfcrown? I can't judge the scale. I would like to see the reverse, too. What's the host coin date?

    Very nicely done. image

Speaking of holey coins, and other "damaged" pieces:

It's not engraved or counterstamped, but I just negotiated a new addition for my Holey Gold Hat a few minutes ago.

This one has an important pedigree for holeys, being from D. Thigpen, who's the true "King Of Holey Coins", though a lot of people have stuck that title on me just 'cause I happen to wear mine. Thiggy was selling some holey gold on the BST for charity, and I didn't have a $5 on the hat- my biggest US gold holey was a $3 piece. I'd have felt good about buying this one even if it wasn't going to a charitable cause.

Hats off to you, Thiggy! (Pun intended.)

I've got the $5- now I need to get a $10 and a $20 someday, to round out my US gold holeys. Need a Charlotte and Dahlonega coin, too. Thiggy had an 1851-C gold dollar up for sale but I just couldn't afford it right now.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

    Hi Greg,

That half is very cool. I bet you're doing a bit of digging on the owner. I was watching that Queen Anne. Nice pickup. Finally, is that "Merchant Counterstamps on American Silver Coins" that you are using to look up the Gould coin?

engraved, yes that is the Gould source i'm using.....and i traded with the B&M shop and both sides were happy.....i gave up some items that should be much more liquid to obtain these offbeat esoteric pieces

and Terry (asheland) is being tongue in cheek here......we both live in the same part of the country and i KNOW for a fact he has seen them before

    thanks for the comments everyone

    Thanks for sharing.

I bet you have one FANTASTIC collection.

Care to share any you have on Bust coinage?

    Thanks

That 1868 piece is most likely Gould's but there could be more than one or a fake could have been made. However, it does look original from the wear/patina/dirt. One source to check on is the Gould auctions from around 1976. Sol Taylor auctioned off Gould's collection in 2 auctions and these piece very well could have been in these auctions. I've been (passively) looking for a copy of these catalogs. You could also check with Sol himself and see if he remembers it or has records of who won it though this is probably a long shot.

Yes, those are cool coins. I usually see them as Ronnie gets them. I especially like the one you got at the show with the engraving in the center.
I think you have it posted on these forums somewhere.
    Take care.
