Birthmark Die #19!
Man, it has been a long dry spell!

Back in January a forum member PMed me with images of a 1967 SMS to ask my opinion. I couldn't tell what it was from the obverse image, but the reverse image displayed the die markers for these, so I asked him for better images of the obverse. Sure enough, it was a Birthmark Die! I told him if he wanted to sell it, I'm a buyer. He said if he ever did, he'd give me first shot. Contacted me last week, we did deal, and it arrived today.
Needs a dip, after which it should grade MS66CAM.
Woo hoo!

I have looked at about 250 sms sets over the last year - no Birthmarks for me

Most of what's left in the fields are the planchet ticks caused by metal flow. Now that it's been dipped, I think it has a good shot at grading out as a DCAM.

Congrats on your hoard.
Yes, I thought you were being conservative in the initial post, but after seeing it post dip, your much closer to DCAM. That bit of conservation did wonders!

<< <i>Now PCGS MS66DCAM.

Congrats, Even though PCGS does not recognize these officially, do they still keep track of them with a different coin number?

Nope, same coin number. Nobody cares about these except for a few of us obsessed freaks.

<< <i>Nice, Russ. Do these have much of a premium? How frosty do they have to me for you to be able to see the "birthmark"? >>
The last one I chased on eBay I bid double market value and lost. But, that was a 65UCAM with a market value of around $100 for a normal one, so it's not a good indicator. The premium is much smaller for higher graded, more valuable examples.
These need at least moderate frost for the birthmark to be visible, but there are several reverse markers that would still be visible even if a coin is fully brilliant.

I only need 18 more to catch you.lol

HeHe.
Nice addition Russ. I'm still searching for them too. I just don't have the contacts you have.
1 more and you'll have your box of 20!
After achieving that goal, are you gonna stop and let some other folks in on the fun or what??
