Do you know anyone who has lost a significant amount because they bought a Chinese fake?

They must be out there, but I personally don't know anyone who has lost more than a few dollars buying those fakes.

I personally don't know anyone, but when a 1795 D.B. off center $ first showed up on ebay a couple of years ago, it was so authentic looking, that I put in a bid of $600 (taking a chance of course) and was outbid, fortunately!

I was told of this story from a secondary perspective so I can't confirm all the facts, but a few years ago there was one U.S. based dealer who allegedly purchased an entire bag of BU Trade Dollars when he was in Hong Kong. He paid a premium for the coins thinking they were real. Upon his return to the U.S. those Trade Dollars were submitted for grading and every single coin was bodybagged for "questionable authenticity".

I'm sure personal greed was also a substantial contributor to this dilemma, and if it was then consider it poetic justice.

i bought some olympic silver bullion off ebay when the olympics just
got over. took it to the local BM once i had it in hand because I had
a creeping feeling i had a fast one pulled on me due to the weight.
Sure enough it was fake and I would gladly spit on the country called
china. Why you say? I did some research and found out that a big
chunk of their economy is based on deceit, lies, and corruption when
there is no outside factor keeping them slightly honest.

What got my goat was when a co-worker of mine ordered a set of BU state quarters from a major Coin World advertiser (she found from one of my cast off issues) for her family for fun. The CW dealer soaked her 4x the face value. I loved the way the coins arrived 10 stuffed into a single 2x2 flip (5 to a side). Our dealer friend (recently kicked out of the ANA I think) made a tidy little sum from someone’s naivety. Just the thought of it pisses me off image

Feel what you may about fake coins originating from China or anywhere else, but when you say that you would "gladly spit on the country called China" you are spitting on me, my ethnicity, my family, 1/5 of all of humanity and 5000+ years of positive contributions to civilization. Corruption, deceit, lies, etc. happens everywhere, even in the U.S. as they are not traits that are exclusive to one country or one people.

yup! i am done with anything chinese even remotely related to PMs.
Oh sure, when i goto buy a new computer i realize parts might be
made in china but keep in mind those parts have oversight by a
company that attempts to have standards. China makes previous
US counterfieting look like a little old baby compared to their massive

FC, let's assume everything you say is so -- that makes us, as a nation, entirely complicit inasmuch as our economy is pretty much completely dependent on their willingness to lend to us. And what nation imports the greatest amount of Chinese manufactured goods? I'm afraid you've guessed it ...

There are abuses everywhere. I'll tell you this -- I was happy to find out that a sweater I really liked when I saw it last weekend was (guess what?!) made in the USA. For once, I bought it ...

but that is enough from me. lets see if anyone else on this board
got ripped due to not doing enough research before buying.

guys and gals. yes my comments were inflammatory. yes china has

the year 2008 and they want to play the game their way. screw them. time for them to grow up as a country if they wish to be treated
as a 1st world country, today. Anyone here naive enough to think they
do not know exactly what they are doing? beuller? beuller?

you mean the people who spent more they could afford and then
wish to shift blame when they could not pay? it seems no one forced
them to buy a home they could not afford and cause all this ruckus.
Now wall st has crashed and congress has to bail them out.

    how about that for spin?

fc, what banks lend money to people who can't pay back? Was that done of their own volition? Take a look at Fannie May and Freddy Mac.

Unfortunately most eBay purchasers of these fake Chinese Olympic related bars don't even realize that they've been duped. My guess is that 90%+ of the Olympic Bars offered on eBay are fakes. I'm not even sure if there are any real ones out there. Panda America does not sell them, there has got to be a reason for it.

If you are allowing media articles and reports to influence your thinking without the benefit of firsthand experience or knowledge then you are misinformed and too inept at independent thinking. If China is the business equivalent of Gallipoli then there would not be the trillions of dollars worth of venture capital from all over the world invested there just in the last decade alone.

Saying that you're not racist because you're dating a Filippino is akin to saying: "I'm not racist even though I hate the French but my girlfriend is Croatian". Most Filippinos would agree that they maintain a culture that is of a totally separate identity to mainland Asian cultures. Most mainland Asians also believe that Filippino culture is almost totally different from their own.

Since you brought up your Korean sister and nieces to support your argument, I have these questions to ask about them...Are they in regular contact with their biological parents or anybody else in Korea? Do they speak Korean to a level that they are able to carry on a conversation with a native speaker? Have they traveled to Korea for any purpose other than business? Do they have any close Korean or Asian friends? Have they had a serious dating relationship with anybody Korean or Asian? Are they members of a Korean based church congregation? Do they or have they belonged to any Asian student club at school? If the answer is "no" to more than a few of these questions then it is likely that if it weren't for their natural hair color and facial features they would be totally indistinguishable from any given female who can trace their ancestry to the Mayflower voyage.

I have seen others get duped horribly. I personally don't know them but do see it all the time on ebay. I'm sure
you do too. We used to be able to warn a buyer but now the ID's are hidden. Oh well.

Now as far as fc's statement is concerned I agree wholeheartedly. I'm not Chinese, nor are any of my realatives.

However, it is a fact that the Chinese are very good at counterfeiting everything from purses to coins to art to
whatever. Is it their fault? Who knows, it just different for them than for you and me. Their government does
nothing to stop the problem, why? Well it's because they have over a billion people to try to take care of and if
this little Chinese guy figures out a way to support himself and his family 100% and without gov't help then they
will look the other way. Ok, they've been doing this for centuries and it's a way of life for many of the fine Chinese
peddlers, hawkers, fakers, etc. This does not change the fact that they are the EXPERTS in the field of fakes. I
see some Turks and Lebonese are good at it too. The Chinese just excell at this art.

you are changing the conversation from china to me. i wonder why?
i could care less about the difference in chinese from south koreans
from phillipines. That is not my area of interest. People are people.
i am talking about countries as a whole. I can tell you right now I have
no interest in living in china. I would rather have some semblance
    of liberty and freedom.

the US thought china was a great investment opportunity and still
do. Once they figure out how to get around the huge amount of counterfeits.

"60 Minutes found a corner shop in Donguan, China, selling clubs by Callaway, the American manufacturer of the famous Great Big Bertha driver.

The Chinese government didn’t want 60 Minutes to bring our cameras, so we did – undercover. Inside, we saw a club that looked and felt like the Great Big Bertha. Not only that, we were offered Callaway irons, putters, golf bags, gloves, and even a Callaway umbrella.

And the best part? What would retail for close to $3,000 in the United States, was being offered to us for $275. Why? Because, as the owner of the shop readily admitted, the whole set was a copy.

That’s what they call it in China. But at Callaway, they call it counterfeit."

see that part about china controlling if cameras can be allowed in the
country and where you can use them? how you can defend such a place
is beyond me. But i do not want to debate it anymore. The chinese
cannot even surf a free internet behind the great firewall of china.

this link says all i need. it speaks for itself.

personally, I think the little drops of blood that are lost on things like ebay counterfeits adds up to way way way way more than the bad guys ever score on a "big counterfeit sale"... it's just a constant low grade volume where someone lets themselves get taken for $10-30 and never persues it. do that a handful of times in month... over and over and you see why it's such a lucrative practice. noone ever persues the originator... ebay gets their commission and someone chuckles at the lost money... and the beat just goes on and on.

I read some but not all. 95 percent of the stuff that arrives in the US from china is crap, the other 5 percent is not any better. It is becoming a better grade of crap but still a long ways to go. I am not spitting on no one. I have read some articles as FC has posted. It is hard to trust ANY government period. One government openly conterfiets US 20's and 100's to pass off. I will take over paid, under worked over priced USA crap 7 days a week and glad i live here.image

I have traveled to lots of countries and US cities and the chinese openly sell fake goods past off as real more than any place i have ever been. I have not seen it in New Orleans or any other US city that does that. Out to make a living is one thing but...

I have been thinking about this, i have a gut feeling ( a year later and more knowlegeable) that i had a fake 1894 morgan dollar. I sold it once and the guy returned it and never gave a reason. I took the same coin to a houston in 2007 and tried to sell it to 4 dealers. 2 said it was fake and 2 said it was real. They all wanted to buy it for some price. I sold it on ebay for 800 and the post office lost it. The post office paid me so there may or may not be a fake 1894 morgan out there.

As far as fakes go, i guess the US is good at selling fake autographs.

I can't say that I know the folks personally, but I've met several online.
Over the years, many people have come to the eBay discussion board, after dropping quite a few bucks on fake coins.
Most of the purchases were from sellers in China.

It's never pleasant when you inform someone that they've been slicked.
You can offer to steer them in the right direction, but most are too mad, or embarrased, to listen.
Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?
