I just spoke to a Mint rep who informed me that orders that have been placed earlier in the week that are not shipped out yet will be price adjusted to the new prices.
that's good news--- I guess. what about coins like the $10 buffalos that actually repriced higher???
I got off the phone with the mint 30 minutes ago, referencing an order placed yesterday, and they said the price would not be adjusted.
Adding: just to be clear, I'm not arguing about the point I'm responding to-- I just think the Mint hasn't thought this through and there's some confusion as a result.

Anyone else think the gold proofs and plat proofs will not be part of the Dec 19 melting party and could remain on sale thru June 2009 (or until the Mint depletes inventory and decides not to mint anymore)? I think we all agree the buffalo uncs and plat uncs will be selling out soon (not sure about the eagle uncs).
Last night I happened to print out all the pages so I could compare prices. Here they are if anyone is interested in the 11/12 and 11/13 price differences.

Yes, that's basically my current belief - I think the bullion coins are not part of the December 19 melting party, but scheduled for a June 2009 melting party. I don't think the Mint will make any more if they deplete inventory, just my opinion.

Good job, glad someone did this.
My question to the Mint is; why is the 1/10 proof $200 when Platinum is selling for $800. That 2007 @ $244 was when Platinum was over $2000.
Going into the Mint clearance sale Nov. 15 I know some collectors will be evaluating the possibilities of low-mintage American Eagle coins, especially the platinum versions that I have spent so much time on in the last few days.
I have the latest sales figures here and that might help those trying to figure out the angles.
The “W” uncirculated platinum American Eagle numbers went up a tad.
The one-ounce is at 423. The half ounce is 849. The quarter ounce is 2,115 and the tenth ounce is 2,504. The number for the four-coin set is 1,257.
The proof platinum numbers start with 1,670 one-ounce coins. The half ounce is 837. The quarter ounce is 1,081. The tenth ounce is 2,398. The four-coin set is 1,571.
Other numbers for other Mint offerings are posted in Mint Statistics every Thursday.

He must have posted that before the mint repriced because I can't imagine the mint changing prices again on the 15th. I would think these new prices are what the mint stays with until sellout or the PM's go up or down enough for them to pull the coins again.

Agreed. I don't think Dave was aware of the repricing, but I wouldn't be too hard on him-- he was the first person to report the Mint's decision to discontinue all these coins.
this repricing between 11/12 and today is or is not what Saturday will have to offer pricewise?
I think the expectation is that this is it as far as these coins go.
I think the discontinued coins are different than the clearance sale coins-- the clearance is intended to get rid of inventory. The discontinued coins are not part of old inventory, they are programs that won't be continued next year. If you check the Mint's website (or earlier in this thread) there are 2 press releases, one about the clearance sale and another about the discontinued programs. US Mint pressroom
My question to the Mint is; why is the 1/10 proof $200 when Platinum is selling for $800. That 2007 @ $244 was when Platinum was over $2000.
I suspect it has something to do with the increasing popularity of the smaller plats. Generic 1/10 oz. uncircs are fetching $130 to $145, close to the previous price of the 2008-W proof from the Mint.

As some of my coins I ordered on Monday went up while others went down, I too called and the rep told me nothing would be adjusted. She had no clue about the sale on staurday or any of the rules associated with it. She thought only old proof sets wouild be on sale???? Anyway, as my order is still in process she said I could cancel and rebuy at the lower prices, which is what I was planning anyway.

These are what I have, Neo's might be a little different and his are probably a little more correct. I noticed a slight difference in one of his posts, but things are moving so fast that I haven't updated my own info yet:
2006-W Uncs: 1/10th oz - 3,544 1/4th oz - 2,676 1/2 oz - 2,577 1 oz - 3,068
Looks like the 1/2 ozers and the 1 ozers are still in play. The 1/10th ozer and 1/4th ozer - who really knows?
Q: Are You Printing Money? Bernanke: Not Literally
Does anyone think the clearance sale to take place will include the 2007 Reverse Proof set?
I think it might. The only way they stand a chance at moving the remaining inventory (assuming they minted a full run) is to dramatically reduce the price.
We've been focused on the discontinued lines... has anyone given any thought to whether the "last chance" products offer any value?

From the Clearance list, I see only one item -- 2004 US Mint Set. This retails for $40. Other than that, the US Mint will probably have to really lower the prices to move the items.

Not for long, prices will crash on these just like the did for the Ocean In View coin covers that were re-offered. The funny thing is that the Ocean in View coin covers used to bring in over $100 on the bay. when they were re-released, the price crashed down to the level of the other covers in the series. but they mintage only went up a couple of hundred units. they are still by far the lowest minatge in the nickel coin cover series.
Its all about perception. if you get these 2004 mint sets, don't sit on them.
With the mint's activities it seems that coin collecting can be nearly as risky as investing in Lehmans. One minute something is rare and sought after in the secondary market. The next minute the mint "finds" more and destroys the existing value structure. I wonder it they will find a few million reverses of 2007. You never really know with the mint.
Gold and silver are valuable but wisdom is priceless.
<< <i>Don't some of the Sacs also carry a premium? >>
Yes, but again if the supply increases the price will go down. If you can get them for close to face it might be worth picking up a bag or 2. I did find an error coin in a 2002 bag (back in 2002). I think an error dealer gave me $25 for it.
I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff will be coming down for quite a while!
What is the consensus on the 4-coin buffalo set in terms or short term returns and long term returns.?
Proof
UNC
or both
I already have the UNC set on order and have some spare CHANGE left over that the Democrats in congress haven't taken from me over the last several years. I want to buy some more gold before the current set of Democrats get it all and redistribute it to the deserving masses. :-)
Should I get another UNC set or spring for the Proof set?

What money? Bush and Goldman Sachs already stole it all!
I just received some of the coins I ordered Monday. This is my first gold buffalo purchase. The packaging is over the top; very nicely done, certainly explains a lot of the premium over melt required on these coins. Indeed, if you look the price list on these, US Mint, the 1 oz unc buffalo is $968.88 in the "celebration" packaging but $999.95 in the regular packaging -- that's a $30+ premium for the box.
The proof buffalos come in a darker color box, and the uncirculated in a lighter color box-- the darker boxes look nicer in my opinion, though I prefer the unc coins to the proof.
The boxes are BIG and relatively heavy. The individual $10 coins, which are slightly larger than a nickel, are packaged in boxes that are approximately 4"x5"x1.75" and feel like the weight is approx. 1lb.
I like the 4 coin sets more than I thought I would, and even the small $5 coin pulls the design off much better than I would have expected. The coins fit pretty snugly in their spots; there's a notch underneath the coins, so if you press down on the plastic housing, it raises the back of the coin so you can remove it and see the reverse.
I am confused by the mint's intentions. Is the mint planning to sell out what stock it has of buffalos starting tonight or are they still producing them until June of 2009 at the reset pricing? What is the consensus here?
Gold and silver are valuable but wisdom is priceless.
<< <i>What is the 'group think' on the 4 coin unc. plats??

If you ask me-return- but I am not a plat fan just because it is a lot o money to tie up for a modern that may take many years to really be appreciated. That is just me though. Only 70's would even merit a hesitation for me.

Here's what Dave Harper reported on his blog:
Mint Deputy Director Andrew D. Brunhart says of the clearance sale, “It will be limited time. First come, first served. No household limits. All sales will be final. If you’re wondering, we won’t exceed any Mint limits.”
The sale will conclude at 5 p.m. Dec. 19, but some products are likely to be gone well before then.
Of those that don’ sell, Brunhart says, “We’re going to be doing a significant detrashing and melting (of) the products that do not sell by Dec. 19. Those products will be immediately broken down and sent to the melter.”
The clearance sale is part of a major re-evaluation of the Mint’s product line. Brunhart says the product offerings will be reduced from more than 550 available in 2008 to roughly 200.
Leftover 2008 products will stay on sale until June, when they will get the same detrashing and melting treatment.
“From now on at the end of each year, we will examine our portfolio to make sure the warehouse is not stuffed with products they (Mint customers) don’t want,” Brunhart says.
“We’re undergoing a significant renewal of our numismatic portfolio in 2009. We have too many products. We have heard loud and clear from our collecting community. We are responding to that. We will be focusing our resources on key products (with the) broadest appeal.
here's my interpretation
looking at this report of quotes from Brunhart, coupled with the 2 press releases, it's my belief that the clearance sale relates only to the long list of junk they have in inventory (old proof sets, unc sets, quarter bags, etc.)
I think the recent repricing of bullion issues was just that- a repricing. Nothing to do with the clearance sale, other than the fact they are obviously trying to move inventory.
I think 2 detrashing/melt dates are set. One, December 19, is for the clearance items. The second, June 2009, is for the discontinued coins (buffalo golds, platinums, etc.)
I think that the discontinued lines are probably not going to continue to be struck, only because it doesn't make much sense to do so if the endgame is to melt these. I very much doubt that any additional platinums will be struck. I'm less certain with the gold buffalos ONLY because those did not have a preset mintage cap, and it seems possible to me that they could have unstruck .999 fine blanks ready to go. However, even if that were true, if minting more would require them to obtain additional packaging items (these boxes are pretty fancy), than my guess is that they won't bother.
I think that the discontinued bullion coins will continue to be sold until the current inventory is gone or June 2009, whichever comes first. If any are left come June 2009, those will be melted.
<< <i>What is the consensus on the 4-coin buffalo set in terms or short term returns and long term returns.? >>
I looked at this mainly in terms of the bullion value, using the data supplied by CoinNews.net LINK
I decided that it didn't make sense (in terms of the bullion value only) to pay the mint hundreds of dollars extra for 1.85 ounces of gold, when I have been buying First Spouse gold for less than bullion value on eBay, thanks to the 25% Microsoft "discount."
But will the extra money forked over to the Mint for the Buffalo (or the Eagle) sets come back some day if/when collectors really want to pay more than they can buy the sets direct from the Mint? That's a question I can't answer, but the US economy will have to recover first, won't it? After all, the reason the Mint is stuck with all this stuff is that people are losing their jobs.
Still, the one-year type for the fractional denomination/sizes could be very attractive in a few years. That's what you're gambling on, if you decide to buy at this time.
So I'm not going for this "opportunity." Besides, I need to save a few bucks for the High Relief St. Gaudens coming out in January.

Real brains at the Mint, lowing prices on an item that is for all intents and purposes sold out.
The rep at the mint that I spoke with said there would be NO price adjustment.
TYPICAL for the mint customer service.
That's what the person I spoke with told me as well -- for an order I placed yesterday (cancel button was gone).
Anyway, I think those customer service reps probably know less about what's going on than we do.

Good job, glad someone did this.
My question to the Mint is; why is the 1/10 proof $200 when Platinum is selling for $800. That 2007 @ $244 was when Platinum was over $2000.

The Mint didn't buy the platinum at $800.

Agreed. I don't think Dave was aware of the repricing, but I wouldn't be too hard on him-- he was the first person to report the Mint's decision to discontinue all these coins.
sorry in advance if it's been mentioned....
I suspect it has something to do with the increasing popularity of the smaller plats. Generic 1/10 oz. uncircs are fetching $130 to $145, close to the previous price of the 2008-W proof from the Mint.

<< <i>I just spoke to a Mint rep who informed me that orders that have been placed earlier in the week that are not shipped out yet will be price adjusted to the new prices.
The rep at the mint that I spoke with said there would be NO price adjustment.
TYPICAL for the mint customer service.

Does anyone have the 2006 W plat UNC numbers handy?
2006-W Uncs:
1/10th oz - 3,544
1/4th oz - 2,676
1/2 oz - 2,577
1 oz - 3,068
Looks like the 1/2 ozers and the 1 ozers are still in play. The 1/10th ozer and 1/4th ozer - who really knows?
I knew it would happen.

I think it might. The only way they stand a chance at moving the remaining inventory (assuming they minted a full run) is to dramatically reduce the price.

Other than that, the US Mint will probably have to really lower the prices to move the items.
<< <i>From the Clearance list, I see only one item -- 2004 US Mint Set. This retails for $40.

<< <i>Don't some of the Sacs also carry a premium? >>
Yes, but again if the supply increases the price will go down. If you can get them for close to face it might be worth picking up a bag or 2. I did find an error coin in a 2002 bag (back in 2002). I think an error dealer gave me $25 for it.

or both
I already have the UNC set on order and have some spare CHANGE left over that the Democrats in congress haven't taken from me over the last several years. I want to buy some more gold before the current set of Democrats get it all and redistribute it to the deserving masses. :-)
Should I get another UNC set or spring for the Proof set?

What money? Bush and Goldman Sachs already stole it all!

I looked at this mainly in terms of the bullion value, using the data supplied by CoinNews.net
LINK

I've got a non MS70 set that can be returned.
Keep or return??
We're talking an expected mintage of about 3,000 for the 2008 unc plat coins- there aren't going to be any more.
Sure, all things being equal, you'd rather have a shot at 70, but those sets are on backorder. If you return what you have, it's gone.
Think of it this way: If you could turn the clock back to 1997, knowing what you know, would you return a MS69 Jackie Robinson $5 gold?
My vote would be to keep it.
