The checks in the mail, life is beautiful, etc.,etc.,etc... it's a BS lately when dealing with EBay buyers.
In the 7-8 years that I have been selling odds-n-ends never have I ever dealt with non paying bidders.
Just in the last few months I'm now dealing with my 5th case.
Time to set-up every listing as Instant Paypal Payment Required.
No Mo Mr. Nice Guy... as my mug below is now available for purchase!

As a buyer I have never used anything other than patpal. Of course since I am not in the US it is the only reasonable way.
I admit I can not understand (I do NOT mean not agree) with the problems of sellers accepting paypal. I am sure there are many reasons I just don't understand.

There's been a big whine fest on only taking paypal due to their percentage hit.
However offering the buyer the option of sending a Personal Check, Money Order, or Cashiers Check just isn't working lately.
So this is more of a Pro-Paypal post in a way.
This version of Ebay sure sucks compared to it when I started in 1997.
I wish they'd leave it alone for awhile I don't need them messing up my searches and sure don't want all the fakes from China showing up in the collectors searches!
<< <i>I like the immediate payment required option. It takes out all the guess work and weeds out the deadbeats. >>
Me too, yet feel this is the last resort... Sad but "you wanna play, you gotta pay".
This keeps the deadbeats from doing any rapid mouse clicking.

Thats how I have always used eBay. Why bid to win if you can't pay? That would not make any sense to me.

Please dont spam the US forum with your sales, go to the BST!
$50 item
ebay fees: $6.36
paypal: $1.75
the ebay fee is over 10% but paypal is not a big deal on this item and makes it easy.
$5000 item
ebay fees: $143.35
paypal fees $145.30
The ebay fee is more reasonable but paypal is now more than the ebay fee.
$10000 item
Ebay fees $243.35
Paypal fees: $290.30.
Do you guys all realize that for high value items the paypal fees are higher than ebay fees? Are you ok with paypal/ebay taking over $500 on a $10,000 coin? I see lots of whining about dealer markups. Are you ok with paying dealer markup and then this percentage on top of that to paypal/ebay?

If you're paying 2.9% to PayPal, you're getting screwed.

Just wait until someone decides to reverse their paypal payment on you 3 months after buying AND leaving a positive feedback. Paypal's stance on this? "Your out of luck and owe us $xxx UNLESS you can provide the tracking number, have a nice day". Hang on to ALL tracking numbers FOREVER!

No, I'm at 2.2 but I didn't change the calculator at this exercise. I also left out the powerseller rebate since most readers aren't powersellers. --jerry
<< <i>No mail payments is a stupid decision that is nothing more than a fee grab. Plenty of collectibles buyers will leave eBay.

Russ, what percentage do the hence men you send out to collect charge
I liked that, but basicly I think I'm at 2.95 too, how do I get that down cheaper
<< <i>"Your out of luck and owe us $xxx UNLESS you can provide the tracking number, have a nice day". >>
You mean they require that a seller comply with their stated seller protection policy? Just like every other merchant processing company on the planet? Damn them.

if i pay via postal money order and you ship USPS, am I gaurenteed a broken mug in shipping?

Volume. PayPal provides merchant rates. $3k a month - 2.5%. $10K a month - 2.2%. $100K a month - 1.9%.

Yes and as an added bonus I'll fill it with some freshly brewed dark roast columbian prior to shipping!

Exactly! The instant paypal payment was available before this mandatory paypal payment.

Not to sure if I agree with "Plenty of collectibles buyers will leave eBay" ..... as a buyer it's cost effective to open a PayPal acct. No M.O. fees or Postage Fees. Personally, I prefer paypal as a buyer or seller.

For the long run (and if you sell higher priced items) Paypal eats away at any profits you make (if any after all the fee's)

Then you're not getting the eMails I'm getting. This YTD, I've received over $33K in mail payments. Plenty of these buyers have made it crystal clear that they will not sign up for PayPal, ever.

obviously not. I can't recall the last time I received a non PayPal payment, but on the other hand, eBay is not my livelyhood and I only average about 30 sales per month.

I don't considere 3% or less excessive ... It would almost cost you that much if you had a merchant account that accepts credit cards. Now the eBay fees, that's another story...
It just seems like yesterday that I was getting a $10 referral fee for everyone that I got to sign up for Paypal. Prior to 1999 most all sales were checks. I never had a problem and still don't with checks. It's the buyers though that are so darn inpatient. Once they win something - they want it yesterday. I'm afraid there's no putting the monster back in the cage that I helped create.
It's the rising ebay fees and lack of seller feedback that are the real killers.
