I have a few Morgans and a 1/10 AGE that have sentimental value to me.. Nothing special about them.
Just gifts from loved ones...
But I was afraid to piggyback my coins with another member for this reason alone...

It's probably under-graded, too.

To give the coin forum smoething to laugh about
<< <i>shot D/S? >>
That's what I was thinking and maybe they forgot to pay for the designation?
Given the excellent guesses so far, you have to dig pretty deep to come up with something new. I like sentimental and d/s.
<< <i>Because the PCGS price guide says the coin is worth $10,000. >>
Maybe trying to put together a Low Ball Registry set? A PCGS Grading set?
I DON'T KNOW!

• A flood of such low grade Lincolns is all over Ebay as of late with two Dealers pumping them out.
• Some are now finding there way on Teletrade.
• The cents are usually key S dates, but now more common dates are appearing.
The question was "Why" I think it’s indicative of the high cost of MS coins with many left out of the buying market. If you have a decent MS registry set, it may be that the 14 and 21 s in MS are simply not affordable. There was no way you would even see a circulated one in a PCGS holder, unless you make it. And many collectors are not members and do not submit coins. Now, Dealers have caught on and are trying to meet a niche.
I am going to stick my neck out and say, that while many on this forum would preach that if the coin was not worth a lot of cash it was not worth submitting. So I am going to predict that with dealer discounts and the fact that they can make a small profit because the cent is in PCGS plastic, even more will be on the market soon. This will start circulated sets, and PCGS is Lovin it because a slab fee is slab fee. Plus with more affordable coins in PCGS holders, expect to see new circulated sets coming on line and more YN who can afford to collected certified plastic. And in my opinion, this is ALL a good thing.

The situation you describe above has been the case for years in the "with varieties" Registries. For a while I did very well slabbing the required variety coins in VF to AU, buying them raw and submitting them myself. There was definitely a demand from those with non-variety sets who wanted to keep growing their collection, but who could not afford the varieties in mint state. It would be a very interesting development if that mentality had extended down to the semi-keys or even to entire sets.
Edited to add: I do, however, doubt that this was the motivation for certifying this particular 1949-D nickel; I think the D/S misattribution is a much more likely reason. Had the coin been a 1939-D I could see your scenario making more sense.
