Detecting for Roofing Nails

We just got our roof replaced from a hailstorm last spring. When the roofer was finished I asked him if he had run a magnet over the yard. He told me that they were pretty careful and didn't lose that many. I knew better than that. I should have told him I would knock a certain amout off the bill for each one that I found. I'm about 2/3 around the house and I've found 105 so far. I think that I will give him a call. And I did find 4 Zincolns.

There were about two gunnysacks full of nails that we found around the old house I used to live in. Funny thing was, they were all square!

Yeah, ok. Did his snout grow a foot longer when these words proceeded out of his mouth? He's just WAAAAAAY too lazy to pick 'em up.

I guess they weren't using a coil nailer? Or were these from old shingles that were stripped off?
I'm in the process of reshingling my house and I put tarps on the ground to catch all the old shingles and mostly for the small stuff like nails and little pieces of shingles. When I get done and al cleaned up I'll get the detector out to see if any were missed.

Lasert, building code says that shingles have to be nailed down by nails that have a full head. most coil nails have a clipped, half-moon head. Full-head nails are harder to find and more expensive in a coil.

It does suck that they wouldn't drag a magnet around the yard.

They stripped off the old shingles. They did have tarps down. I figured by looking at the tarps that I would have some extra nails. Why this guy did have one off those magnet rollers is beyond me. When I am totally finished detecting I do intend on giving him a call. When you just look at the ground everything looks clean. Butttttttttt!!

You should have just told him that since he was so sure that they hadn't dropped any, he should take a jog around the yard barefoot to demonstrate his faith.

My total on the roofing nails is 121. Time to call the roofer and give him the good news.

I told my roofer about this problem and he billed me ten cents for every one I found. I had to pay him $18. or he was going to file a lien against my property.

Just drive them all into his tires and tell him to consider them "returned". image
