NewP: 1883-CC Morgan

One of my most recent purchases, finally got around to imaging it the other day. The luster is quite amazing on this one. Any and all comments are appreciated. image

What kills me about coins like this:

I'm seeing more scratches from the slab than from the coin.

Gosh, it would look nice 'nekkid'.

  • Very nice, I like the little slice of toning. image

I see a dash under the 8, do you know what VAM it is?

Looking to buy Morgans in ACG, INS, IGA, Old PCI photo, and Hannes Tulving holders.

Coin appears to be PL, so contact marks seem to be worse than they actually are. Scratches on holder make the coin appear to have more contact marks than it actually does.

Nice luster, like the toning. Strike nothing special. Properly graded, don't think it's PQ, but not unattractive for the grade.

    With that weak strike I'm surprised it's a 65.

  • "With that weak strike I'm surprised it's a 65". PCGS and NGC seem to be much more lenient on CC dollars for some reason.

I dont know who would ever call this coin a PL, they must not know much about PL Morgans....this coin exhibits a weaker strike which is evident on the hairlines above the ear

As for the coin, yes, PCGS is more leanent on CC Morgans - especially with the chatter on the cheek - this would grade MS64 is not a CC

But overall, I like the look of the coin, the white luster, and the "swoosh" of toning along the rim.

    It is a pretty coin.

I'm not sure about the VAM...I'll have to research it a bit and find out for sure. Thanks for the comments everyone.

Love it and love the toning and looks accurately graded...
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

7 Over 8 - I don't know much about Morgans, but many of the 83 CCs and 84 CCs come PL. I've owned a number of them and have seen a number of others. Strike is typical for the date. PC is somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 point more lenient on CC Morgans due to their sloshing around on the stagecoach ride to SF.
