lets talk silver

My wife went to Atlanta Mart today in Atlanta Georgia. This is where buyers go to place orders and buy items for there stores and shops.

I told my wife to check with the silver dealers for some bars or coins in .999 silver. At 8:30 am today she called and said the very first shop that she went in had some , I think she said half pound coins. I said thats 8oz's each, right. She ask the guy and he said yes. She ask me how many did I want.
I ask her the price, she replied, somewhere around a $100. I ask, each. Or do you mean a $100 plus. She turned and ask the guy again. I heard him in the back ground , $99.00 each plus tax. I ask her how many he had, she said three. I told her to get them.

My wife then said these are not bars but large round coins, one side has a lady in a long dress and the back has .999 and I missed the rest.

Then the guy said to my wife that silver has already gone up again today. And my wife says back, you already have given me a price and I want all three.

Wife will be home tonight around 9am or so. Will try to get pictures. I have no idea if she checked any where else for silver.

There are only 12 ounces in a troy pound, so they might be only 6 ounces each.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • 12 troy ounces in a troy pound

  • I had and sold several of these thru the yrs. Usually when that say half pound, they are 8oz's, not always. The other things to consider is, they need to have .999 silver stamped to be able to sell to Dealers. They are just as saleable though on ebay with or without the purity.

let's not talk silver here, there is a precious metals forum for that
  • even if she only got a "troy" half pound, she did pretty good.
  • You just paid 16.66 an ounce... They are some neat looking Washington Mint replicas of an ASE..

They do say half pound on the coin... Very mis-leading to say the least..

They sell for around that on Ebay. It would be nice if they came with the blue velvet case that came with them
    from the Washington Mint..
  • Yeah you have to believe its only 6 ounces. Now way he is selling 8 ounces for $99, which is less than $12.50 an ounce when silver spot is $13. Everyone selling silver today is asking for a pretty hefty premium. Maybe 6 ounces for $99 isnt horrible, but its not a great deal either. You could probably get 6 ASE's for $99, then you have 6 coind to look at. JMO

It's a pretty common scame to sell a "half pound" of silver stating it's 8 ounces. Most people relate a pound to 16 ounces not ever realizing the unit of measurement for common household items is AVDP, 16oz AVDP = 1 pound AVDP.

Precious metals are measured in Troy, not in AVDP. There are 12 ounces per Troy pound and 6 ounces per Troy half pound.

I've seen this scame more than a few times and it burns my chaps every time.

agree with coll3ctor. If it has the standing liberty on the front and says half pound, its 6 ounces. They are decieving people.
