Weak strike MS63?

The spotted toning does not seem that attractive to me.

Yes you are correct... Pics posted below more of what it looks like in hand by dropping the saturation levels.

Not wild about the toning, but would leave it alone as it's original. I don't see this coin as a weak strike however. I see skirt lines and a thumb and plenty of feather on the Eagles breast. It looks like an early date MS65 to me. What am I missing?

MS-64

The head has good detail. Reasonable strike.

The scratches are too much for 65. The toning is ugly. Don't dip it, but maybe give it the Taco Bell napkin treatment. Nice luster, just lousy color.

Obverse has a few light scratches in the rays and right field. Reverse is WOW. So, let's say MS64?

I have never understood the grading of au58 walkers. I have seen and owned many pcgs au58 walkers
that were taken from bank wrapped unc rolls and sent to pcgs and came back au58. I have watched many of these eget cracked out
and sold raw as uncs. (hell, they were uncs).

Then again there's a plenty of MS63-64's with Stacking or Roll Marks that look more like AU58's... there was just a PCGS MS63 18-P on Ebay based on the obverse I wouldn't have touched that WLH.

I've only de-evolved back to AU58 since becoming friends with MFH, as prior to that I was a MS64-67 guy for 2 decades.

I'm having a LOT of fun over the course of the last year with these super sliders... yet this may have to be my last "Guess the Grade" as others are catching on!

That's cool, as I first viewed the pics and then scrolled down, I was thinking to myself AU58. But as I starting reading others opinions I was thinking an MS grade. Just trust your instinct!

Don't get all that absorbed on the breast as mentioned below WLH's have Stacking/Roll marks.

Here's the 18-P that crossed Ebay, I thought it was a 63 it was actually as MS64.

While I can understand the grade of AU, the strike detail shows the coin as MINT STATE.
I'm not a fan of toning, per se. Mottled toning is my least favorite, but I would take this coin any day in my collection.

Just FYI and thanks for sharing it, Broadstruck.
Correct me if I'm wrong calling it mottled.

I'm fine with Mottled... it's not the most attractive toning one could wish for. I've never dipped a coin, but feel this example wouldn't survive a dip without looking flat and dead. It has a great strike and the 1918-P is somewhat underrated as I have owned plenty of AU55-AU58 18-S's but the 18-P above VF30 to sometimes XF40 just isn't out there in the same quantity as the S.

like others, I can do without the mottled look, but I wouldn't kick it out of my collection, not by any means!

I thought the problem with this coin was some slight hairlines on the right field and that explains the 58 grade. I think it is nice. I have an 18 in a 58 holder as well without hairlines but not as sharply struck as this one. The reverse is very attractive for the grade

PCGS often calls uncirculated coins AU58.
I would call this coin a 62 manybe 63, without seeing it in hand.

Most dealers would call it "GEM BU" if it were raw.

I love the coin as an AU58 and there appears to be very faint hairlines in the fields and on Ms. Liberty that would be consistent with a brief spell in circulation. This is a great coin.
