Ok... here we go... Just broke a full box 1977 opc baseball from the same lot everyone is getting in this break. I will start with the bad news from my break. I opened 1 pack and thought I hit the jackpot with a gem Reggie Jackson. These are hard to come by centered. I think only 3 psa 9's and no 10's. This card looked perfect until I looked at the back...
There was a printing crease/scratch, whatever you want to call it right down the middle of the card. Broke my heart! There were 16 packs that had cards like this. only 2 packs had stars with that crease/scratch. Both were Reggie Jacksons.
Overall I cant say how happy I am with this box though. These cards for the most part looked like they just came off the press. These cards are BRIGHT white. I expected offcut cards and there were some, but centering overall was much better than expected. I have around 350 cards sitting here right now that just look unreal! Many PSA 10's in here, no doubt in my mind. Most stars I got 2 of. ryan, schmidt, yaz, brett, all the leader cards, seaver, carlton etc. Only 1 rose (it was O/C)... Now here are some scans....
<< <i>How bad does PSA ding the fuzzy edges on these OPC? >>
Those edges are expected with OPC and PSA doesnt knock off for that. Do some research on some high end graded cards on ebay, you will see many 9's and 10's with fuzzy edges
Have you found a large difference in the size of the 77's? Width wise? I have a nice amount of graded 77's and they seem to vary A LOT in width. >>
I have a boatload of 1977 OPC and know what you mean about the width on some of them. For the most part, the cards in this box were all about the same size in width. There were a few that were short (also expected out of these). Here is a scan where you can see the Stargell is shorter in width (compared to the Parker). All my 77 stargells are like this though... CHeck yours out and see if they are the same way...
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
Fun rip overall. I am sure a bunch will upgrade cards in sets I have.

Not bad results, kind of wish that Reggie would have been centered. I ripped 3 total '77 OPCs and these were the only centered ones, the rest were like the Reggie. It was Goose Gossage day at the ballpark, and I pulled a Sandberg RC. Overall, I'm very happy with the rip. Can't wait to do it again!
<< <i>Mine were here all along, just never looked at the side door of the house. >>
Yeah, I think that definitely broke the odds with those cards...I don't know if the rest of you should even waste your time ripping your packs...nice pulls.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
Got mine today. Still assessing the damage after the UPS guy molested my box. Will rip and scan later. Opened 4 packs of 89 Fleer from one of my extra boxes though. Two Griffeys in 4 packs!!
For the bored guys at work, I tooke off today to rip some packs and I will post results as I rip. However, I think the first part will not be very exciting. Going to go ahead and rip the 89's.
Two questions - were all the packs in this rip supposed to come from complete unopened boxes? If I plan on having the packs encapsulated by PSA for my pack collection should I be concerned that two of the packs have the gum busted up inside the packs in small pieces?
Thanks!
Looking to trade for, or purchase, raw or graded vintage for my baseball sets: 1927 York Caramel, 1951 Bowman, 1957 Topps, 1967-1979. http://richsbaseball.webs.com
All mine look excellent. I bought two lots, one to open one to keep. I had a hard time deciding which packs were in the best condition to keep because they all looked clean and crisp.
BTW, half way through my 89 Donruss box and so far this was a great box in 1990. One Griffey, 2 Johnson rookies and about 48 Sabo's. There seems to be a Sabo in every pack.
Before Topps sued them in late 81 and they turned to puzzles.

great centering on those 81s.
tsalems,
sweet color on the opc. is the reggie actually a crease or just a print mark/indention? the ryan on the right looks great and the bretts.
Thanks,

looks like a scratch and crease but doesnt show up on the front at all, just the back. Its not a print mark/indent.

I'm fairly certain these packs came from fresh boxes, since there were 36 lots (36 packs in a box).

<< <i>Every piece of gum I pulled was in tact, and only one pack had the gum stuck to the card ('81 Donruss). The rest were crisp and clean.

Since when did gum come with '81 Donruss cards??
