The 1899-S $1 in MS64 is probably worth less than the submission fees & insurance. The unfortunate submitter could have saved money by throwing his 1899-S dollar in the garbage and chucking the rest of this stuff up on ebay with blurry photos.

Edited to add: how would you like to be the dealer who sold him all of this stuff, if it was all purchased from one individual? Can you say "irate customer"?

Man! It's painful just to LOOK at this!

Personally, I'd like to see some of these coins.

If the submitter had the guts to at least "try" then maybe
he or she can post some pix so we can learn something!

If you have these, post pix please! image

I think I'd rather see a bunch of "not genuine" next to them. This submission tells me that someone forked with a lot of choice coins and their customer got burned. I don't think a coin doctor would be dumb enough to submit such a big portfolio at once given PCGS's new stance on coin doctoring. It'd be nice if as part of the TPG crackdown they could track this submission to the doc and out him.

What strikes me here is obviously someone forked over a substantial amount of money BUYING these coins that although did not grade, are FAR from being worthless! These are still very valuable pieces of History.

What also troubles me is the fact that someone is out a lot of money on grading and judging by the type coins submitted, said submitter certainly is no Novice to coin collecting.

I'd like to "see" these in the hopes of learning something new today.

I'd like to see what it is that the graders saw!

I won't say bad things about the host here, but I recently got a questionable color rejection on an NGC crossover Morgan that has a very low serial number and which I have had for well over a decade. This was back when they were dipping them for blast white lusts. Nobody was AT'ing, and certainly not at the subtle peripheral degree of this coin. I think all three top TPGs are gun shy and are rejecting way too many perfectly nice coins nowadays. Would not surprise me in the least if these weren't all from an long held Wayte Raymond album collection. Of course that is all speculation. Bet the submitter is spitting nails right now though.

Knock on wood but I've had real good luck crossing coins sent still in the slabs. I've never cracked any out.

I even managed to get a couple PCGS coins regraded higher (still in the slabs)!

NO WAY I'm cracking any certified coin out to roll the dice! Uh-uh!! image

Shows why so many dealers talk down the grading services. I doubt this submitter will be buying anymore coins from the dealers he used previously.image

I'd like to see what these coins looked like.

I've never liked 'Questionable Color', nor 'Altered Surfaces' as reasons to BB.
    WTH does that mean?
The 'experts' can't decide if it's NT or AT??
They obviously saw something 'wrong' with the surface of a coin, but won't tell us what it was??

I feel badly for the submitter, but I've been there too.....only not to this extent.

I'm somewhat in the mind of Coxe. While I strongly suspect the submitter has trouble knowing what AT looks like I also suspect that some of his/her earlier dated coins could have gone either way, AT/NT. Given the batch of AT stuff he/she submitted then I suspect the graders were going, "Yet more AT coins".

I recently had a couple of Trade Dollars, that I believed to be genuine, and bought from a good source that were returned from across the street as "Questionable Authenticity." I didn't agree with that, nor did I like being given no opinion either way, while being charged nevertheless. ANACS did agree with me that they were genuine, and encapsulated them.

I think that in the current "crackdown" the pendulum has swung too far in the opposite direction with many good coins getting bagged. Although the OP's example is a bit extreme, reading the shared orders page lately has been like reading the obituaries.

Know what would be icing on the cake? ....if PCGS blacklisted the submitted as a coin doctor due to this submission of questionably colored coins.

Seems like a few grading companies dont want to slab colored coins anymore because of the doctors around. But seriously, some coins have gorgeous color which IS natural. I guess right now is just a bad time to be sending them in.

I dont understand "damage" or "scratch, rim dent". Arent all coins damaged to some degree?
  • Options
"Environmental damage" ? Hmmmmmmmmm. The coins that were retrieved from the shipwrecks and slabbed were not damaged? Oh I forgot They didnt clean them, they "conserved " them. My mistake.
  • Options
I'm pretty sure this is a coin doctor who tried to put something over on PCGS but apparently his skill isn't what he thinks it is. Good job PCGS!
  • Options
It could simply be a group of coins that were being sent in by a dealer for a second or third attempt at getting slabbed. He/she may have expected a high rejection rate.
