An 1851 seated dollar in low MS or a very nice 1872-cc seated dollar. They are the last two keys that I need for my seated dollar set.

Interesting old thread to pull up Greg image

I missed it back then, and might have answered differently then as well.

As for today, if a true AU55/58 attractive piece is in existance, I would buy a 1804 Bust Quarter in Choice AU ... and it would be the centerpiece of my ChAU Quarter set.

Unlike Rhedden, I would forgo the 1802 half dime and, like Tmot99, would opt for the 1792 half disme. As to the reasons why, this would be a once in a lifetime purchase, so why not use it for a real piece of Americana, one that we know was once held by both Thomas Jefferson and President Washington. The 1792 half disme has long been on top of my want list, and one day I hope to own one, short of hawking half the collection to do so.

I would buy this coin ...... againimage Why? Because it is exceedingly rare (4 known) and a beautiful design. I find it interesting that the coin has an eagle and the motto "In God we trust" on both the obverse and reverse.

I would spend it on a 1909 VDB Matte Proof Lincoln.

I'd probably go for this one.

    imageimage

Mexico - Republic. Pattern 8 Reales, 1823-Mo-JM (Mexico City). Buttrey Pn-21 (plate coin); KM-Pn-3 (plate coin). 26.93 grams. Hooknecked-eagle, left, holding looped defiant snake. Reverse: Liberty Cap, rays behind. Herringbone edge. Superior strike. Light hairlines from ancient cleaning hidden under fine old toning - multi-colored but strongly russet on the obverse recesses, and more towards the blues on the reverse. NGC graded Proof 63.
    Estimated Value $50,000 - 60,000.

Provenance: Ex Porraz Collection. Possibly UNIQUE, and the only known specimen in private hands.

Anything pre 1800 gold. Or a 1796 or 1797 half dollar. Early halfs are a lifetime set but I dont think I will ever be able to afford either

Some monster coin. Any date, type , metal, or denomination. Why? Because it is a monster.

Not that I could find it when I have an extra $50k, but I suppose a nice AU-58 -MS-62ish 1861-D gold dollar. Loads of history for the money. Most all other coins that are equal to it in rarity are well over $100k.

1796 quarter in EF, or 1797 half dollar in Fine, or possibly a 1797-1804 capped bust eagle in AU.

Why? because other than in a hypothetical CU forum thread, I have no chance of having any of these any time soon

I'd get an XF chain cent b/c:

    A) I've always wanted a Fine+ chain cent, and have long term plans to aquire one.
    B) It'd be a great coin for my daughter to eventually inherit.

Almost 5 months later, let's see if anyone has any change(s) in plan...

I'd probably stick with an 18th century U.S. coin...

    Go to eBay.

    Search for US coins.

Look for Buy It Now auctions.

    Sort by price, highest first.

    Voila...expensive garbage for you...

    Linky

This looks like what i'd go for. I know the BIN is only 20k, but it's got a "Make an offer". Perhaps the seller would take 50K?

Seriously, this is an impossible question for me to answer. I do not really look at coins of this price as I will never be part of that market. Oh, okay. I would get an 18th century gold eagle. And a half eagle too. D'oh.

If I had an extra $50,000.00, I would absolutely spend it on 1 ounce Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins.

Very boring choice I know, but most likely the most profitable one.

A 19th Century PCGS or NGC slabbed Deep Cameo Proof Gold coin.

Why? Because I want (and deserve) one of those coins.

In fact I want an 19th Century Proof Set, from Cent to Double Eagle with all coins being graded Deep Cameo PR65 or better. Why?,,......................................., Why not?

1797 skinny eagle half dollar...the only silver (and silver is the only metal that counts) type coin missing from my US type set. It is also 1 of only 3 years missing from my half dollar 1794--present year set. (I also am missing 1796--the other skinny eagle year and I haven't ever gotten around to picking up this year's edition.)
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
