I'm buying just one 1/4 oz'r Proof, and no unc....OK, I changed my mind when I looked at my wallet!! image >>

I checked coinfacts, and the American Ealge 1/4 oz is 22mm in diameter. The Buffalo Nickel is 21.2mm in diameter.

Interesting, SilverEagles........but, the Buffalo Gold is .999 fine, not 22 karat like the AGE's...that will make a difference of ~1 or 2mm in diameter IMHO.

The 1/4 oz could be 23 or 24 mm!!!!!! Your thoughts???

edited to add, or they could make the gold buff the same as the nickel in diameter, and increase the thickness.

    It's all speculation.

I hope Monday the Mint has more info!!!

  • I think the diameter should be the same... But what do I know? I guess they could increase the thickness. I would think they would make it the same diameter, or they would have to completely redo all the packaging they have. Logistically, it makes more sense to keep the size the same, or as close to the same as possible.

According to CoinFacts, a Buffalo nickel weighs 5 grams....75% copper, 25% nickel.

1 Troy ounce of gold is 31.104 grams....making the 1/4 oz gold buff....7.77 grams.

Can anyone confirm this??....the 1/4 oz gold buff is almost 3 grams heavier than the buffalo nickel....seems logical.

I'm going to resist these as much as possible, but I'll still probably get a half ozer.

BTW, the Mint is doing little to nothing promoting this product.

    I'm in the same quandry.

The proof will be prettier and mirrored with a real nice faux leather inset.

The unc will be more nickel like, but still gets that faux leather inset.

    Such a decision!!!!

The quarter oz proof and unc look like high mintage coins (only in comparison to the other denoms) by the response here on this board.

Nope. These things are gonna be a "dime a dozen" in MS....but a VF one, now THATS a real treasure image

Many years ago, I had an Uncle who was a Bricklayer. He made good money...but Geez was he tough on his vehicle. So, whenever he bought a new truck, the day he took delivery, he would take his 5 pound mallet and smash in the front fender, in front of the shocked salesman. He said "OK, now I dont have to worry about getting a scratch on it" image

Can anyone provide a good reason as to why I should order one today as opposed to just waiting a few weeks, or a month?

Not trying to start trouble, but just wondering if there's any reason w/ unlimited mintages.

Obviously if you are eligible for FS, but if not...

Maybe possible returns from customers picking out the 70's. You may get picked over coins if you order later. If you order first you have a more even playing field of getting better quality coins maybe. Forget about First Strike Eligiblility since that is no longer available to collector club members, just dealers. JMHO.

T minus one minute until 12 noon eastern time, July 22nd.

Will the Mint website be prompt?

  • pf70collectorpf70collector Posts: 6,753 ✭✭✭
Finished my order in one minute. Superfast. 1/4 ounce proof and 1/10 uncirculated. Order suspended. cancel box gone in stock and reserved. I am hoping this is just procedure. I followed the rules ordered at precisely 12 PM.

  • << <i>Finished my order in one minute. Superfast. >>

    Yup, me too-

No surprise there!! Not many people will be buying these at those prices.

I still think the 1/10 unciruclated at $129.00 is not a bad deal so added that one too.

You owe me a cup of java ... I want it mailed via Registered Mail, with Insurance, Restricted Delivery & Signature Confirmation. ( Note: Pos. FB may be given upon receipt of item in "hot" condition ) image

PS I did not order any. Need to wait for the dealers to offer First Strike 1 ozers....

And now that they are available, I have second thoughts.

I've bought lots of stuff this past weekend, including a very cool 1849 gold eagle. I believe a total of eleven holes of my 7070 album were dealt with as well. My credit card is a little overheated and i've got checks in flight.

They aren't going to stop selling these things or reprice them within the week, right?

I would feel better waiiting until early August as far as cash flow goes...

    "I can't take the pressure!"

Darn you all. You are all getting them first!

It looks like it may be smart to stay away from the 1/4 ouncers since many people want this coin because of the Buffalo nickel. I'd say that's going to be the most common coin in the series. I'm going to wait and see how the mintages come out for a few weeks unless I see a spike in gold............

Wow, that was the fastest I have ever seen the US Mint on an opening day for a cool coin. I logged in and had my coins in less than 30 seconds!

It's been fast lately due to all the flipper demand being gone on mint products.image
  • mbogomanmbogoman Posts: 5,244 ✭✭✭✭✭
It may be the most popular and most common, but I just signed on the dotted line for the 1/4 oz. proof. With the unlimited mintage and the high premium over spot, I'm going to hold off on ordering any more until the picture clears up a bit...

    "In stock and reserved"
  • I don't see these buffs as a flipper coin. The mint prices are way to high for a flipper to make any money selling them, especially on the bay with all the fee's involved.I will wait and buy mine in the after market cheaper than what the mint wants. The mint will be selling these for some time with unlimited mintages.
  • bumanchubumanchu Posts: 1,383 ✭✭✭

One half ounce uncirc. for me.

Was going to be 1/4 unc & 1/4 proof, but I couldn't justify the premium(s).

And I ain't lying this time.

If you are interested in getting your coins shipped you may double-check your order status as I placed an oder at 12:51 and it notes "suspended"... called the Mint and they said it did not go thru yet they could take a phone order as "this is a current issue".
