<< <i>People on this board, like myself, take it personally when someone insults the intelligence of the collective community.
<< <i>
Well,
a) how exactly did I insult the intelligence of the collective community? b) why would you take it personally?
<< <i>When you start quoting SMR prices it's obvious you are hyping up your cards to inflate the value/demand in order to get your price. >>
NO IT'S NOT!
SMR is a price guide that is widely used by people all over the hobby. Yes, I agree with you that in many cases it's accuracy is questionable, but that is the case with all price guides (since none of them, VCP included, track more than a small percentage of hobby transactions) and doesn't mean is it completely useless as a price guide. It's a reference point, no more, no less, and that's all I used it at.
For you to equate my reference to SMR in my OP as an "obvious attempt to hype up my cards, inflate the value/demand, and insult the intelligence of the collective community"....well, all I'll say is that you probably are taking yourself a little too seriously.
In stating what my asking prices were in relationship to SMR, all I was trying to do was save people the time and effort of having to look them up themselves. Everything else is people's overactive imagination....
After all, I could argue that all of you who see fit to criticize other people's posts and act as unelected watchdogs are "insulting the intelligence of the collective community" as well, since your actions imply that everyone else in the community it too stupid to do their own research and decide for themselves whether or not a price is fair.....
If you have a problem card and want PSA to buy it back in many cases they will use SMR.
SMR is not the bible, however, when I do trades (the person I am Trading with quotes VCP and SMR) or sell on Ebay many cards seem to fetch SMR or just below values. To say it is worthless is a lil overboard. Is it 100% accurate? No, but then again what 'guide' is?
In this case with Matt, he chose to use SMR for the 64 Topps Giant and is well within his rights to do so. No one is being forced to buy anything.
The first poster to advise him did not act rude but simply stated what info he had (VCP) regarding that card. If anyone has a problem here it should not be with the 64 Topps Giant but with the 58 GAI graded card where SMR was also quoted.
that post just about ruined any chance of a sale...
not interested just walk away...dont ruin the thread with any type of chance at a sale... - swartz1
I agree with swartz1. Too many individuals on this board are intent on sabotaging the threads of others under the guise that they are "educating" or "protecting" their fellow board member, when in fact, they are just taking out their daily frustrations via aggressive posting ("post rage", I like to call it). It guess it's better that they do rage against other forum members via these posts than beat their spouses or kick their dogs. However, it is inappropriate to do so. Members of the forum should be able to state their asking price and let the market determine if it is acceptable or not. If you don't want to buy the guys cards, you need not respond to his thread. If you wish to purchase the card but think the price is too high, PM a counter offer.
The OP did make an incorrect statement, which was corrected by listing VCP's price tracking.
<< <i>I know SMR isn't known for it's accuracy, but they're not going have a card listed for twice what it's going for..... >>
The OP's responce to the correction should have been "Oh, you're right. I still want $xxx" for the card," not setting the stage for this mess with all the extra comments about VCP, markets, etc.
My two cents...Sometimes people wont even take VCP in a "make me an offer." I just recently "made an offer" that was exactly what the last card for sale sold on VCP. I inquired about the card and asked if it was for sale. He said "make me an offer." I told him the last one sold for X and think that my offer is fair. The guy gets kinda perturbed and says it would go for more money than that. Not a problem for me, I just wish people would say their price on a card, instead of hoping someone will throw out an offer that is "way higher." The funny thing is the guy has the card on Ebay right now for 30 bucks higher than what the last one sold for. I doubt he will even get the one bid.....
If you want to pay a VCP price then you'll have to participate in an auction, win something, and then you can pay the nextprice they list in VCP. It may be higher or lower than the last VCP price depending on if the card was better or worse, and if the shipping charge was high or low.
Flintboy - You complain even when the person specifies their price. You just like to complain. I even generally agree with your point, that the person should specify their price rather than waste people's time. But you're just a complainer. Anyone familiar with your posts will recognize this.
No one "called me out" when I posted cards for sale here. I used VCP and some guesses on the cards "real" value, most sold in about a day with not a single complaint or negative comment. You are using a free forum to advertise to a savvy group of hobbyists, sometimes free advertising isn't all it's cracked up to be. When I buy, I use VCP as my guide and I'm willing to go over by a little (unless I have to have it). I have no problems with anyone's prices and I have no problem with anyone complaining about them, you are under no obligation to take less money and the (as you say "busybodies") are under no obligation to remain quiet.

Talking about me, huh?
Well, the last sale was indeed $105. The one that sold a few weeks before that one went for $174. The average sale price over the last 2 yars has been $130, which is the price I set it at on Ebay. I didn't feel compelled to accept an offer that represented the 3rd lowest price out of 22 sales.
Complainer? .....Nah, I have too many people on this board who will vouch for me. I just dont like you shoving your website down our throats twice a week for the last three months. At least in the last week you have had a few responses that were not peddling your website. I knew there was hope for ya....Digicat, your right you did not have to take "my offer." I really do hope you get what you want for that card. If you would have comeback with x is my bottom line, and it was right in line with VCP, I probably would have bought it. I simply felt like you were offended by my offer. When you factor in Ebay and paypal fees, was my offer really that far off line of the average price of $125.00????
Digicat. Your $175 SMR card is very nicely centered and well worth the $130 price. The $105 price that flintboy selected from VCP was for a card quite off center to the right and purchased on the cheap by a dealer for resale. That card is now on Ebay at $150. Flintboy is just trying to buy centered cards for off centered prices. No harm in trying but he shouldn't complain about it when the sellers don't fall for the scam.
Scam artist? I am the farthest thing from that. Secondly, you refer to the "$175" SMR card. The fact of the matter is that a 63 Mccovey isnt even close to being a $175 card. Pre war sold one in the last 22 auctions for $174 bucks. Pre war auctions I stay away from for a number of reasons. The other 21 auctions were not even close to $175. I am guessing that you are a dealer KB. Most dealers love the SMR for that reason alone.

Blue devil and you can bet that everyone here is familiar with your posts as well.
Who are you to tell people what they can or can't say?
However, it is inappropriate to do so. Members of the forum should be able to state their asking price and let the market determine if it is acceptable or not.
I remember asking you that very same question, getting an answer and simply saying 'oh ok' and the next thing you did was challenge me and Nam to find one for a cheaper price anywhere on the net.
Then when I told you I did not appreciate being lumped in with Nick you went on a rampage.
Steve, you're right. I should apologize for the Nolan Ryan rookie card incident. I did pick you out of the group as a target. But man, you have to admit, it worked. At one point, I think you posted like 7 unanswered replies in my thread. You kept me at the top of the board the entire day, even when I wasn't home.
1) People should state their asking price. If someone makes an offer and you don't like it, tell them what you'll take for the card. I try to put an asking price on everything even when I don't provide a scan immediately. If someone PM's me, I tell them straight up what I want for the stuff.
2) If you're going to post stuff for sale on this forum, try to have something constructive to say on other threads. Nobody likes someone coming over here just to pimp their stuff. Heck, I sell stuff on Ebay all the time but I never pimp my auctions over here because I get tired of others doing it.
