Man-Oh-Man!!!!!

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
I can't believe how boring this place has gotten and how watered down the membership has become. It used to be that there would be at least a few interesting and thought provoking topics at any given time. Lately, it's a reach just to find something that gets to the second page of replies which is actually worthwhile reading. With my page set to display 50 threads, ther are currently less than 10 which have 30 or more replies, and that includes the two about Gold News and the inane John Nanney discovery thread!!! Am I mistaken in recalling "the good old days" when there were many, many thought provoking threads??

Trying to find some reason for this slow activity is a puzzler. Summer weather can't be the cause, it's never slowed this place before. And it's a Saturday afternoon so most everyone should be off workj, except all you hard working dealers looking in!! I also seem to feel that the population of former active members who are now active lurkers has grown. I smell something in the air, can't be death or fear, so what the heck is it??

Since there seems to be such a dearth of active participation and interesting, thought provoking topice, please reply with a possible thread idea. We need it......................Deep in our hearts, we want it..........................Longacre, you are asked to please refrain from any suggesting.

"Am I mistaken in recalling "the good old days" when there were many, many thought provoking threads??"

Yes and no, because it wasn't so much the original thread but the educated responses which made them into good threads. Now many of those people have been bammed or have moved on.

How about a thread about 08/07 ASE'S? There's not enough talk about NCLT these days.

That should make an interesting, thought provoking thread. IMO...there is an incredible number of new collectors who think that these are those days. image

Keets, I'll probably get bammed for saying this, but....well just see my fish.

That forum contributed to this forum and gave people a place to relax and talk about anything.

    Now it seems, well boring.

We still get Copper For The Weekend and many excellent posts. An educational experience, no doubt. Heck, I enjoy your posts. All is not lost, but PCG, IMO, has scared away some of the best. Take Care, jws

    Thought provoking topic:

WHY WON"T PCGS recognize and add the RDV-006 AKA "FEV" Friendly Eagle Variety 1971-D IKE Dollar to the Major and Complete Varieties Sets?

This is a major coin and deserves to be recognized.

I am sure KEETS will agree with me on this subject image

I am coming up on my 4 year anniversary. Before I joined in 8-2004 I lurked and learned. Many of the persons who posted regularly when I first joined have been banned, have left or have died. Many of these persons posted very high quality, informational, educational topics. Further, there seemed to be many persons who enthusiastically participated in many of the posts, offering their own insight and opinions and experiences and pictures. Many of these persons are still around, but they do not jump in and contribute to the same degree that they did in the past. Maybe they get tired of rehashing the same topics.

I find myself running hot and cold when it comes to posting new threads or replying to existing threads. Many times I find that threads I initiate in 2008 generate few responses [i.e. a thread about 1950-1970 Cameo proof and SMS coins (which are some of my favorite coins to collect)], compared to the number of responses such a thread posted by me in 2004 and 2005 would receive.

I also find that in general the vibrancy of the forums dropped off substantially when the Open Forum was terminated. The OF was a very lively place and some of the liveliness of the OF spilled over into the US Coin Forum. Sure there were some OF posts that were racy and some that dealt with politics, government and religion. Sure there were obnoxious, crude moronic posters on the OF. However, the OF provided lts of life to the forums. I wonder if there is any chance that PCGS will ever consider reestablishing an Open Forum (albiet, one with rules prohibiting specified unacceptable topics, the violation of which would result in banning).

Today the number of posts to coin related forums other than the US Coin forums are minimal. Further, the posts to the US Coin forum are of less interest to me than in years past. Perhaps the education I have received here since joining in 8-2004 has made it much more difficult for a newly posted thread to grab and keep my attention.

I have not checked ou the ATS forums. Maybe I should give it a try. How many forumites also post ATS?

I haven't been a member long, although I lurked for a while before posting, but I'll offer my opinion. There have been a number of prolific and thoughtful posters who have left, but there are still others whose posts I enjoy. And you can tell from the huge post counts that they have continued to contribute frequently over the years. This is still a great place to learn, and a much better resource than any coin club.

As for subject matter, I understand the desire by the ownership to avoid the name calling and nastiness that topics such as politics can provoke. And it's true that there are other forums for those subjects. But as someone who loves politics as well as coins, it's tough to sanitize my posts sometimes. And I think that although this is a numismatic forum, it's natural to want to come here and talk about a variety of things, just as we would with friends and families in our everyday lives. Also, coins/history/politics often overlap. If everyone was respectful, no censorship would be needed but that's not realistic.

Things go in cycles. If you search back in the forum history, you would find topics that were hot then but are mundane now. Statehood quarters might be a good example. And there are often multiple Ebay threads, particularly when policy changes are taking place. But that's normal since so many here buy and sell in that venue. The bottom line is that like anything, it's what you make it.
  • BECOKABECOKA Posts: 16,961 ✭✭✭
Not too many people here collect what I do which limits the responses pretty quick.

I would love to see more historical posts talking about how gold coins were minted in the early 1800's. i.e. photos of the colors, the presses why dies so often cracked etc...

There are a lot more silver collectors for the years I am interested in who can have nice conversations on die varieties, die pairings etc...

Wish we could have a lively discussion on why certain pairings happened on early gold. image

Sorry to say Al that there are too many attention whore$ on these boards for quite a while now.
You have buffoons asking questions just to have other buffoons give inane answers to whatever they can think of at that moment.

There use to be a time when you could talk coins on a coin board with other people about coins and go to other internet boards to talk about other topics.
Not the case anymore these days.

Guess I am tired of scanning through 2 pages of...
"Can anyone think of a lampshade that reminds you of a coin......." threads that get 25 childish responses (not even from children), but newbies asking coin related questions get 3.
Maybe a law (and Medical) degree just promotes a$$es these days. --I know you know who I mean, but it doesn't matter now does it?
You may be embarrassed to know that others know who I mean also, but you probably aren't.

Sad part is these attention whore$ threads are spawning new attention whore$ to do the same.

    Yeah it is different Al.

to help keets out, what can be done to encourage numismatic discourse? I'm enjoying my QDB book about the California gold rush, I'm about half way through. I've thought of lots I'd like to ask, but I keep reading hoping the answer is no more than the next column over. QDB doesn't leave many questions, does he?

RWB answered my question about cameo cutters in the blink of an eye. How can that be improved on?

    Al,

How about... why some people who have registry sets keep their coins locked up, even though they stated they sold the entire set to someone else last year and that person sold some coins to me.

It sucks for me, when I can't get the coins released in time for the Registry Set annual cut-off, full well knowing I'd finally have a #1 set...
