Nope, makes it MA (market acceptable) or at least PA (PCGS Acceptable).

Coins can and do tone this way naturally. The broken pattern of the toning is one clue I look for. It has the appearance of a natural skin if you will. Some coins of this genre tone with this type of pattern in deep browns and sometimes blacks so I do not see it as anything except NT.

Think about an oil slick. Sometimes the colors reflected in that slick are not readilty apparent until the light hits it just the right way. Then the colors blossom in front of you. The same is true of coins. The surfaces can appear dark and ugly until the light is cast at just the right angle to present all the colors that are actually there.

I think Stefanie's coin is as NT as they get but I personally do not care for that particular pattern. Thats not to say it isn't a nice coin because it is, it's just not MY coin.

Stefanie, is the reverse a stark white?

I never liked the bright toned coins, I prefer the
muted colors. For some reason this one screamed

I also think the image may have been juiced a wee bit.

Personally, I think its ugly. It appears to be AT and the color, in my opinion, detracts from the coin. I realize that I may be in the minority, but I really don't care for heavily toned coins, especially the AT ones. Just my opinion, and as my ex-wife would always remind me, my opinion means squat.

I like it, though I think the violet near the edge is not so bright in-hand. The colors are NT and are not all that unusual on US Mint Set toned coins for the era. I am also a fan of splotchy toning and think this is an attractive coin. This is NT and not MA or AT.

I've seen some crazy colors come out of coins in these holders, '58-D Franklins for one come with some of the most vivid colors imaginable from ORIGINAL mint set toned coins of that time.

    I dig it - a lot!
  • Don't take this the wrong way fellow posters but anyone who has any concerns about this particular specimen being AT should certainly stick to widgets image

Classic mint set toning.....very common on the 1957 and 1958 sets and I agree with TomB....this is not an MA coin......this coin would grade 100% of the time at any of the top TPG.....as for eye appeal.....I can see why some might not care for it. To me it's a beautiful coin with lots of eye appeal and I am sure you will always find a willing buyer if you should ever want to part with it! image

The folks who say this coin is AT have not looked at enough 57 mint sets.

That coin is straight form a mint set. My guess is very bland colors on the reverse, but just based on looking at hundreds of 57 mint sets.

I like it because it's unique, not necessarily super prettyimage

A strong no and not my kind of toning. To me the toning is just splotchy colors and makes Washington appear like its his death mask. Pretty colors yes but for me they do nothing to enhance the look of the coin. Going by the photo not much luster showing.
